CAMBRIDGE, MA – When play began on Saturday at the ITA New England Championships at MIT five Eph singles players had advanced to the Round of 16 and all three doubles teams had advanced to the quarterfinals.
When Saturday's play ended on day two of the three-day ITA New Englands event the Ephs found junior Juli Raventos advancing to the semifinals in singles play and to the doubles final with senior Linda Shin.
"The level of tennis today was high all across the board," noted Eph head coach Alison Swain. "All of our players were pushed in their matches and responded well. It's exciting to see our team improving with every round. All of our individual successes in this tournament are truly a result of a full team effort."
Junior Mia Gancayco, seeded ninth, played sixth seeded Victoria Yu from Wesleyan. And lost ins straight sets 6-3, 6-0 to send Yu into a match with McDonnell Nieto Del Rio.
In her first match of the day junior Giulia McDonnell Nieto Del Rio faced Bowdoin's Joulia Likhanskaia the third seed. McDonnell Nieto Del Rio upset Lukhanskaia in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, but she fell in the quarterfinals to Wesleyan's Victoria Yu in three sets. Yu took the first set 6-4 and McDonnell Nieto Del Rio posted a 6-4 win of her own in set two, but Yu took the third set 6-3.
Senior Hannah Atkinson squared off against eighth seeded Vickie Ip of Amherst in her Round of 16 match. Ip came out on top winning 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomore Leah Bush opened the day playing fifth seed Alex Fields from Middlebury. Bush was defeated 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Second seeded in singles play junior Juli Raventos took on Middlebury's Katy Hughes, a ninth seed in the Round of 16 and she defeated Hughes 6-2, 6-0. In her second match of the day Raventos downed fifth seeded Alex Fields of Middlebury 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.
Raventos will face Amherst's Vicki Ip in the semifinal round on Sunday.
The top seeded Eph tandem of senior Linda Shin and Juli Raventos were pitted against the fifth seeded team of Bondy and Hughes from Middlebury. Raventos and Shin prevailed 8-4 and advanced to the semifinals where they faced teammates Hannah Atkinson and Chloe Henderson.
Atkinson and Henderson had defeated Middlebury's Orozco and Puccinelli to earn the right to face Shin/Raventos. Raventos and Shin defeated Atkinson and Henderson 8-3 to claim a berth in the doubles finals.
Giulia McDonnell Nieto Del Rio and first year Sydney Myong were pitted against the second seeded tandem of Eudice Chong and Victoria Yu from Wesleyan. The Wesleyan duo posted an 8-3 win over the Ephs.
Chong/Yu then defeated the Amherst duo of Wagman and Calla to set up a finals match-up versus the Eph tandem of Raventos and Shin on Sunday thereby legitimizing the tourney seeds as Raventos/Shin were seeded first and Chong/Yu were seeded second.
