WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Alison Swain's 14-4 Williams College women's tennis team, the 2017 NESCAC champions, have been selected as an NCAA Regional Host Site this weekend with play beginning on Friday and the regional champion being determined on Sunday.
Matches will be played outdoors on the Torrence M. Hunt '44 Tournament Courts, but if inclement weather intrudes, play will move inside the Lansing Chapman Rink.
The Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, TN. will host the NCAA quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals of the team competition May 22-27.
The championships provide for a 49-team tournament. Automatic qualification (AQ) is granted to 40 conference champions, which form "Pool A." One team was selected from true independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions (Pool B). The remaining eight teams are selected from those teams in conferences with automatic bids that did not win their conference's AQ.
The schedule for the 7-team regional is as follows:
Friday at 9 a.m., Johnson & Wales (15-3) will play Wilkes (23-0). At 12 p.m., Carnegie Mellon (17-7) will battle Messiah (11-7). At 3 p.m., Mary Washington (19-5) will take on Westminster (Pa.) (12-0).
Saturday, the action begins at 9 a.m. with host Williams playing the winner of the Johnson & Wales/Wilkes match. At 1 p.m., the winners of Friday's 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. matches will meet. On Sunday, the regional final will be played at 10 a.m.
Host Williams enters as the 2016 NESCAC champions and the Ephs have won their last five matches in a row. Williams will play the winner of the Endicott/Wilkes match on Saturday.
There will be live stats of each match. That link will be provided later in the week.
