CLAREMONT, CA – The Ephs wrapped up an undefeated trip to the West Coast with a 8-1 win over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. This bumped Williams's record up to 8-0 on the spring and 9-0 on the year, while Pomona-Pitzer dropped to 7-4.
"Every match so far we've had to battle something different," said Ephs head coach Anik Cepeda, "The heat was challenging today and we had several comebacks in all of the singles."
Juli Raventos '18 paired up with Korina Neveux '19 in doubles to break the ice with the first win of the day for the Ephs, overcoming their opponents by a score of 8-4. Pomona-Pitzer bounced back, earning their first and only win of the day as Pomona's Maryann Zhao, a senior, and Arianna Chen, a junior, overcame Chloe Henderson '20 and Rachel Cross '21. Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio '18 paired up with Emily Zheng '20 in the third doubles match for an 8-5 win, sending the Ephs into singles matches with a 2-1 lead.
Senior Mia Gancayco got things started in the #5 singles slot, downing her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Leah Bush followed with a three set win, defeating Pitzer's Summer Garrison 6-3 in the final set after splitting the first two 6-0, 2-6. "Shout out to Leah for a big mental and physical win today," commented Cepeda.
Korina Neveux clinched the day for the Ephs, edging Arianna Chen 7-6(7-2), 6-4. Raventos won her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 while both cross and Henderson battled through three sets for wins to conclude the day.
"When we manage our side of the court emotionally and let go of bad points quickly, we are an extraordinary group of competitors," said Cepeda."
This victory marked the conclusion of the Eph's West Coast trip. Next week, the team will have back to back home conference matches against Middlebury and Wesleyan on April 7th and 8th. Play will begin at 1:00 PM EDT on Saturday the 7th and 2:00 PM EDT on Sunday the 8th. "We're excited to have a full week of practice and get after the lessons learned on spring break," said Cepeda, in her first year as head coach. "Growth is our objective. And as fun as traveling is, it'll be revitalizing to start our April conference matches at home. Chilly or not, the Berkshires are calling!"
The only other home contest of the year will take place on the 29th of April at 11:00 AM EDT against Hamilton.
