Middlebury, VT - The 2019 ITA New England Regional Tournament began today at Middlebury College. Seventeen Division III schools from across New England competed in singles and doubles brackets. Matches were held at the Proctor Tennis Center and the Nelson Recreation Center.
The Ephs had their best successes of the day in their doubles matches. Senior Chloe Henderson and freshman Maya Jamroz held off Julia Brogan and Isabelle Hartman of Trinity College in a close 8-7 (5) tiebreaker. Freshman Zoe Bennett and senior Emily Zheng had the exact same scoreline in their match, defeating a pairing from Babson College 8-7 (5). Both pairings hope to continue their run through the brackets during tomorrow's matches. Henderson and Jamroz will be playing Heather Boehm and Maddi Stow of Middlebury. Bennett and Zheng will face off against Anya Ivenitsky and Camille Smukler of Amherst.
Singles was not as successful for the Ephs. Jamroz, Bennett, Henderson, and Zheng all lost their matches, as did freshman Katherine Orgielewicz. Henderson was seeded 9-16th in the singles bracket.
Ephs Coach Anik Cepeda said of the day's action, "We had a tough day in singles and found moments to celebrate in doubles. We need to be feistier and treat all points, from the first one to the last one, with equal importance and urgency. Hoping to see that in doubles tomorrow."
Tournament play continues tomorrow before concluding Sunday.
