Canton, NY -- Today, two Williams athletes on the women's track and field team earned All-American honors. Hannah Cole '17 was the national runner-up in the steeplechase, finishing in a time of 10:32.03. Anna Harleen '18 also took to the podium, finishing in fifth place in the 1500m with a time of 4:29.27, less than second off the school record.
Cole and Harleen had exciting and impressive finishes to their successful seasons. Distance Coach Sarah Lagasse is extremely pleased with both of their performances: "Hannah had a great championship mindset heading into the race... We are very proud of her effort and capping off a successful season."
Cole ran with the pack and towards the front for much of the race, hanging near the leader and not making her move from the rest of the pack until well into the race. Coach Lagasse recounts, "She ran with patient confidence throughout the first half and went with the leader as she made her move. The two of them together gapped the field and Hannah had a speedy kick to the finish." Cole was able to stick near the eventual first place finisher until two laps to go, and then Cole had a strong kciking finish to end of a great race, as evidenced by her time which was less than two seconds off the school record.
Lagasse expressed similar pride with Harleen's performance, saying, "We are all elated with the All-American performance of such a young runner." Harleen was able to earn this honor her first year on the team as a freshman. Her experience and keen sense for the race was apparent, however, throughout her performance at nationals. "Anna ran like a verteran, conserving energy in the prelims, and during the finals she had a patient, disciplined start," commented Lagasse. Harleen was able to channel her energy, however, during the third lap and especially over the last 150m to pass her competitors for her fifth place finish.
After an incredibly long track meet, Harleen and Cole were able to post incredible performances on the third day of the NCAA Championship meet. Head Coach Nate Hoey echoed Lagasse's sentiments, adding "We are all extremely proud of the efforts Hannah and Anna had today. They truly started smart and finished with heart, passion, and intensity. It was a great way to cap off the season." Hoey continued to comment on the exciting, evident talent that was showcased in the young members of the team: "We are excited about the future for the Ephs with such a strong deep and young team as we move forward."
