Ephs head to Amherst for NESCAC Tourney; Webcast info

Fran Vandermeer’s Ephs will play for a 7th NESCAC Tournament Championship beginning Friday at top-seeded Amherst College.

Second-seeded Williams (24-7) will play seventh-seeded Middlebury (15-13) at 6 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals. The top-seeded Jeffs will face eighth-seeded Bowdoin at 6 p.m. also. At 8 p.m., sixth-seeded Trinity will play third-seeded Tufts and No. 5 Wesleyan will face No. 4 Connecticut College.

The semifinals and finals of the 2007 NESCAC Volleyball Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s championship final will be web cast on D3cast.com. Click here http://www.d3cast.com/index.php to access the broadcast.

The Ephs won four straight NESCAC titles from 2001 through 2004 and advanced to the championship match against Amherst last year. The Ephs finished 9-1 in conference play this season, defeating Middlebury three games to one on Oct. 24.

Their only conference loss came to Amherst in a five-game match on Oct. 16. Sophomore Melissa Pun leads the Ephs in kills (332) and kills per game (3.02). First-year Nicole Ballon-Landa is second on the squad with 286 (2.62 per game).

The Ephs offensive attack runs through first-year setter Emily Avis, who has compiled 875 assists (10.17 per game) to date. The defense has been strong as well. Sophomore Chelsea Kubal leads the team in digs with 476 (4.86 per game) while Pun has 4.19 per game, junior Andrea Scioscia 3.65 per game and junior captain Riki McDermott 3.18 per game.

The Ephs improved blocking has been one key to their success. Ballon-Landa leads the charge with 0.99 blocker per game, with sophomore Whitney Hitchcock second on the team with 0.69 per contest.
