WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—Tonight the Williams College Ephs (14-1 Overall; 4-0 NESCAC) went up against the Tufts University Jumbos (11-5 Overall; 3-1NESCAC) in Chandler Gym and posted a 3-0 win over the visiting Jumbos.
With the win and a loss by Middlebury at Wesleyan the Ephs are now in sole possession of first place in the NESCAC standings.
In the first set, Emily Doll came out to get the first kill for Williams, followed by Raea Rasmussen with another kill. Tufts then went on a run and the Ephs found themselves down 5-3, but a kill from Tori Jasuta and a block form Emily Doll and Katherine Lane tied the score back up at 5-5. Williams then went on a run of points with kills by Doll, Rasmussen, and Jasuta. Williams was the first to 20, but Tufts was not far behind. Williams widened their lead with two kills from Claire Miller, and then Doll came in to put the ball away fro game point, ending the set at 25-20.
In the second set, Williams and Tufts battled back and forth for the first part of the set, until Jasuta helped Williams take the lead with two kills. From there Williams went on a run with more kills form Jasuta, Doll, and Lane. Williams kept a steady lead through the set, and won the set by the score of 25-19.
In the third set, Williams came out strong with an ace from Ryan Farley for the first point, and a kill by Miller for the second. Williams kept the lead from there and found themselves ahead at 10-6. Tufts then fought their way back into the set and tied the score at 10. A kill from Doll then got the momentum rolling for the Ephs again. Williams held their lead with kills from Lane, Jasuta, and Rasmussen. Tufts kept fighting though to tie the contest up at 20, but a kill from Rasmussen and a block by Anna Spellman helped the Ephs regain their lead and close the third set at 25-20.
Tori Jasuta lead the team in kills at 19. Jasuta also lead the team in digs at 16, while Mandy Schott was close behind with 12. Ryan Farley had 45 assists.
"This was by far our most consistent match of the year for our team," said Eph head coach Christi Kelsey said, "Tufts is talented and very athletic so we had to raise our game up another notch. I'm proud of coming out with a hard fought win
Williams is currently ranked number 25 in division 3. Currently, Jasuta is ranked 33 in all of division 3 for kills per set (3.93), Farley is ranked number 14 in NCAA Division 3 in assists per set (10.3), and Rasmussen is ranked number 1 in Division 3 for hitting percentage (.465).
