NORTHAMPTON, MA -- Playing in Ainsworth Gym on the campus of Smith College, Williams (19-3) was defeated by Springfield (20-5) 3-2 in the Ephs' opening match of the Hall of Fame Tournament co-hosted by Smith and Mount Holyoke.
Springfield is currently in second place in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while the Ephs are atop the NESCAC.
Williams won the first and third sets 25-21, but lost the second set 25-19. Leadiing 2 sets to one the Ephs had several chances to close out the match in the fourth set, but late serving errors enabled Springfield to stay in the match and secure a 30-28 win, forcing a fifth set.
With Springifeld leading 8-7 in the fifth set the Pride scored four straight points to lead 12-7, prompting the Ephs to call a timeout. Out of the timoeut Williams scored four straight points to narrow the Pride's margin to one, but Springfield then recorded the last four points of the set to claim a 15-11 win.
Due to a miscommunication between the host and the competing schools the box score of the match will not be avaialable until sometime on Saturday.
Saturday morning the Ephs will play MIT, which currently sits in fourth place in the NEWMAC. At 3:00 PM Williams will play its final match of the tournament when they face the NEWMAC's top team Wellesley. Both matches on Saturday will be played at Mount Hoyloke and there will not be a video feed.
