Williams Sweeps Colby in Friday Night Conference Matchup

Waterville, ME –– The Ephs (6-9, 2-4 in NESCAC) were back in Maine this weekend for a Friday night conference game against the Colby College Mules (3-10, 0-5 in NESCAC). The Ephs won the match in three sets with the set scores: 25-21, 25-17, and 25-16.

Beginning with the first set, the starters for the Ephs were Ally Ostrow, Alex Newton, Natalie Albright, Tess Richman, Mia Weinland, Roxi Corbeil, and libero Daiana Takashima. The first set began with the Ephs taking an early lead up 4-3 after a kill by Tess Richman and an assist from Alex Newton. However, Colby pushed back and took the lead up 9-5 after multiple kills. Colby maintained their lead at 14-10. However, the Ephs pushed back and after kills by Morgan Richman and Roxi Corbeil they narrowed the deficit to one at 15-14. A big block by Tess Richman and Morgan Richman tied things up at 15-15. The Ephs rushed ahead to lead at 19-15. Colby then called a timeout to talk things over.

Back from the timeout, Colby narrowed the score to 19-17. Up 21-17, Mia Weinland got a kill with an assist from Roxi Corbeil. The Ephs took home the first set 25-21 with a kill from Weinland at match point.

The second set began with Colby controlling the tempo and holding the lead at 6-3. The Ephs were trailing by one at 7-6 after a kill from Weinland. Colby fought back and maintained their lead at 11-6. Down by four at 12-8, Corbeil earned a kill. Down 12-9, first year Allison Frison entered for the Ephs. Frison got a kill down by two at 12-10. The Ephs tied things up at 12-12 after a kill by Corbeil. Colby tehn called a timeout. Back from the timeout, Frison was still up to serve and earned two additional aces. Colby called another timeout with the Ephs up by six at 18-12. Ostrow had back-to-back kills at 21-15 and 22-15. At 24-16, Tess Richman and Morgan Richman teamed up again for another cohesive block. At match point, Weinland had a big block and the Ephs took the set 25-17.

The third set started off with the Ephs going on a major run up 12-3. Colby then called a timeout to shift the momentum. Back from the timeout, Ostrow earned an ace at 15-3. Colby went on a run but Morgan Richman responded with a kill at 17-7. At 19-10, Erin Denham earned a kill. Erin Denham was a force at the net and earned a kill at match point o finish the final set 25-16.  

Head Coach of the Ephs Christi Kelsey remarked on tonight's game. She said, "Tonight was a good effort from our group especially after the long trip to Maine! We got off to a little bit of a slow start in the first but I was proud of how we recovered quickly and then elevated our level of play. In the second and third sets we did a fantastic job on defense and that helped create a lot opportunities for us."

Coach Kelsey noted that the team is looking forward to Bates. She added, "We are looking forward to another opportunity to play tomorrow against Bates!"

Tomorrow, the Ephs are on the road for another conference game against Bates (7-6, 1-3 in NESCAC) at 2:00PM.
