MONTREAL, QUE.--Williams Women's Cross Country opened their season today with a second place finish at the McGill Open in Montreal. The McGill Martlets took first with 44 points, while the Sherbrook Vert & Or took third with 105 points. On a hot and sunny day, the Ephs worked together well on the 4k course in Mount Royal Park.
One of the Eph's greatest strengths is their depth. This was evidenced by the strong packs throughout the race and especially at the front, with a 7 second spread among the top three and a 9 second spread between the next 5. "We did pretty well at following our strategy and by, and large, our whole group looked pretty strong towards the end," said Head Coach Pete Farwell.
The Ephs were led by co-captains Anna Harleen '17 and Victoria Kingham '17, who came in 5th and 6th with times of 15:20 and 15:22, respectively. They were closely followed by Audrey Rustad '20, who took 8th with a time of 15:27. This was Rustad's first race back after significant injuries in the 2016 season and, her excellent performance is "really significant for the team," according to Farwell.
Rounding out the scorers were Anna Passanante '20 and Sarah Tully '21 who took 18th and 21st place with times of 15:47 and 15:49. Close behind them were Stella Worters '17, Erica Barrett '21, and co-captain Emily Sundquist '17 in 24th, 27th, and 28th, with times of 15:53, 15:56, and 15:57.
Overall, the Ephs had a good day in Montreal and Farwell was pleased, saying that "these are great teams from Canada and it's neat to see that we can run neck and neck with them." Next week, the Ephs will host the Purple Valley Invitational on their home course.
