Dr. Steffen Siebert enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Williams College men's soccer team in 2026, after serving as the interim head coach in 2021. His career is defined by masterful tactical innovation, rapid program transformations and extensive experience at the highest tiers of American professional soccer.
A unique asset in the collegiate coaching landscape, Siebert bridges the gap between athletic theory and high-level execution. He holds a doctoral degree in sports leadership, a master’s in sport psychology and dual bachelor’s degrees in exercise science and psychology. He previously utilized this expertise as an assistant professor at Springfield College, where he designed and taught advanced sport psychology and leadership classes to undergraduate and graduate students.
Siebert holds the prestigious U.S. Soccer and UEFA 'A' Licenses, is the youngest U.S. Soccer 'A' License instructor in the country and leads the United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma. As a premier educator for U.S. Soccer, Siebert guides candidates through the 'A' and 'B' licensing processes as the lead instructor for the US Soccer ‘A” and “B” licenses. He also teaches the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Pro courses for US Soccer which is specially designed for professional head coaches as well as current professional players.
His professional coaching background includes a tenure as one of the top assistant coaches for MLS side Real Salt Lake, as well as a two-year stint at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center as the Technical Lead for the "A" Senior License.
Furthermore, his expertise is highly sought after across the youth and academy ecosystems. He is frequently invited by top tier club soccer directors across the United States and Canada to design and deliver high-performance coaching workshops for their staff, cementing a massive scouting and developmental network.
Since taking the helm at Williams, Siebert has engineered one of the most remarkable and rapid turnarounds in recent men’s collegiate soccer history. Inheriting a program that had not won a single NCAA Tournament game in the preceding decade, he immediately catalyzed a national resurgence. Under his leadership, the Ephs broke decade-long program records for most wins, highest winning percentage, hosting NCAA games and highest national rankings, while reaching three Sweet 16 appearances and the program's first NCAA national final since 1995 — a feat that had only been accomplished twice before in the 103-year history of Williams men’s soccer (1993 and 1995). This incredible turnaround earned Siebert the title of National Coach of the Year by the New England Soccer Journal.
Siebert's blueprint for rebuilding struggling programs was established early in his career. Prior to his arrival at Springfield College in 2010, the team averaged a 0.35 winning percentage from 2000-09. During his tenure as the head coach at Springfield, he built a top-10 program that won a regional or conference title in each of his last three seasons and established a record of 49-7-6, an .839 winning percentage. Under Siebert's tutelage in that same time span, his Pride teams set school records for fewest losses (1), most shutouts (13) and winning percentage (.881), as well as wins (18) and goals (69) in a single season, while producing multiple All-Americans and Academic All-Americans along the way.
As a head coach, Siebert has established himself as an elite tournament strategist. He has amassed an extraordinary 13-3-4 postseason record (.750) across ECAC and NCAA Tournament play. This remarkable execution in elimination games further highlights his ability to prepare teams for peak performance on the regional and national stage.
He brings with him a strong history of identifying and developing players at all levels he has coached, resulting in All-American at every institution he has led. Many of the players he has also signed professional contracts in MLS and the USL as well as with clubs in Europe. There have been multiple players who made their national team debut during their playing careers under Siebert.
Siebert has coached at all levels from stints in Major League Soccer, college and the academy system in Germany, and the United States over the last 20 years.
He achieved similar record-breaking success at the semi-professional level as head coach of Atlantic City FC. During his time with the club, the team broke all records, including most points in team history and a final ranking of fourth in the nation, earning him Coach of the Year honors again.
A native of Berlin, Germany, Siebert himself was a two-time Academic All-American for Missouri Valley College and played semi-professional soccer in Germany before suffering a career-ending injury. Siebert was also a member of one of the top German youth academies, 1 FC. Union Berlin.
What former players of Steffen are saying about him:
“Being a personable coach at the highest level is a trait not many coaches in my experience have. But with Steffen, he has that quality and much more. He can speak to anyone in the locker room and lift their confidence. On the tactical side, he speaks to the finest detail about the game. For me, Steffen was a blessing coming into the RSL environment. A coach that cares about a player off the field as much as on the field.”
(Justin Meram, played at Real Salt Lake and current MLS & Iraq National Team player)
“Steffen is an amazing Coach; he has a great tactical knowledge of the game and explains things thoroughly and well. He pays attention to the details of the game which is what is needed at the highest levels of soccer. He connects with players on a personal level and as a coach and is always there for questions of any sort.”
(Justen Glad, played at Real Salt Lake, current MLS and U.S. National Team player)
“Steffen is one of the most knowledgeable coaches I have ever had the privilege of working with. His understanding of the game from a tactical standpoint is unmatched. He is someone who truly cares about his players and will always be there for them on and off the pitch. He is one of my greatest mentors I have had to this day.”
(Ryan Malone, played at Springfield College, Current 2. Bundesliga player)
“Out of all my coaches Steffen has been the most impactful in my life. His tactical knowledge of the game is unmatched but what makes him stand out as a coach is his ability to simplify his knowledge so his players can pick it up quickly. Steffen also has a great ability to teach life skills which all his players can implement off the field. I was a player of his at Springfield College and while there every member of his team not only increased their skills and knowledge of the game but also learned how to be more successful in life.”
(Christian Schneider, played at Springfield College, Current USL1 player)
“Steffen is an incredibly motivated and dedicated coach whose love of the game is infectious. He pushes players to improve in every area of soccer: tactically, technically, mentally, and physically. He encourages athletes to step outside of their comfort zone daily. Steffen has one of the best tactical minds I have ever worked with. He not only has an exceptional understanding of the game, but he also has the unique ability to communicate his ideas so that every player knows exactly what is expected of them.”
(Johnny Fenwick, Played as Atlantic City FC, current USL championship player)
“Steffen was the ideal kind of coach for my development as a player and person. His acute knowledge of the game and his ability to teach has helped me thrive and improve mentally and tactically to get to where I am now. I was always impressed by his tireless effort and attention to detail. I truly believe Steffen’s drive to help his players succeed in all areas of life is unmatched. It would be a great pleasure to play for and work with him again.”
(Jacob Campbell, Played at Atlantic City FC, current NISA player)
