SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Williams College women's swimming and
diving team (5-2) posted an impressive fifteen event victories en
route to a 216-84 victory over Springfield.
"As far as the overall performance today I would call it solid,"
said head coach Steve Kuster. "We had a bunch of people left
at home under the weather and several at the meet fighting through
sickness. Given it's the end of our hardest 4 weeks of
training, I would say the group swam well."
Top Eph performers on the day were senior Julie Van Deuson,
sophomore Lisa Cucolo, and first year Ellen Ramsey, who all posted
multiple event victories. Van Deuson competed against a
strong group of divers and came out on top in both the 1 meter dive
(257.92) and 3 meter dive (267.15), posting NCAA qualifying times
in both.
Cucolo grabbed first in the 100 yard back stroke (1:03.06) and
the 100 yard freestyle (56.49), while Ramsey bested the field in
the 200 yard butterfly (1:03.06) and the 500 yard freestyle
(5:09.42).
The junior class was also strong for the Ephs, as Courtney
Asher, Amanda Nicholson, and Ann Marie Zollo all had event
victories. Asher bested the field in the 200 yard IM
(2:15.62), Nicholson grabbed first in the 1000 yard freestyle
(10:40.30), and Zollo swam the fastest in the 100 yard butterfly
(1:02.05).
Rounding out the event victories for the Ephs were senior
Michelle Kurkul (100 yard breaststroke - 1:10.21), senior Julia
Kropp (200 yard backstroke - 2:15.41), sophomore Sophia Sequeira
(50 yard freestyle - 25.28), and first year Ryan McChesny (200 yard
freestyle - 1:59.49).
The Ephs next see action on February 2nd with a home
meet against NESCAC rival Middlebury.
