WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass - In a battle of one loss teams, the Williams
College men's soccer team fell to visiting Trinity College 1-0
Saturday. The Ephs ( 5-2, 3-1 NESCAC) generated 18 second half
shots but couldn't net a score, while the Bantams (7-1, 3-1 NESCAC)
notched the game-winner off of only three second-half shots.
"We lacked composure and without it you're not going to win
games." Remarked Eph Coach Mike Russo, "We needed someone to step
up and knock in a goal, but unfortunately no one did today. It's
frustrating to produce so many chances but no goal, however we did
a lot of good things today."
The Ephs dominated offensively, especially in the second half,
where they recorded an 18 - 3 shot advantage (Overall - Williams:
25, Trinity: 9) and an 8 -0 edge in corner kicks (Overall -
Williams: 8, Trinity: 3), but could never capitalize off of several
golden opportunities.
Trinity set the pace early in the first half and pushed play
towards the Williams net, but the Ephs battled back and evened the
tempo. However, while each team created chances; neither was able
to get on the board in the first half.
The Ephs however set the tone from the opening seconds of the
second half, nearly netting a goal just 1:30 in when Pierre
Meloty-Kapella chased down a through ball but couldn't punch it
past stellar Bantam goal keeper Zac Trudeau (11 saves). The
scene would repeat itself several times in the games next 15
minutes, but each Eph attempt was ultimately foiled by the
aggressive keeping of Trudeau.
The Bantams broke open the stalemate in the 69th
minute when Nick Cantone beat the Williams defense to the corner
and got off a cross that found the waiting foot of Samuel Wisner
who used a picturesque touch to redirect it past Eph keeper Andrew
Graham (3 saves) and give Trinity the 1-0 lead.
The rest of the half would be dominated by the Ephs as they
tried to even the score, but chances by Sam Empson, Pierre
Meloty-Kapella, Gaston Kelly, and Peter Gordon all narrowly missed.
"We have to put this game behind us and pick up the pieces
because we need to get ready for tomorrow."
Williams looks to rebound tomorrow, Sunday October 4, when they
host Babson College. That game will be played at Cole Field at 1:30
PM.
