WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The St. Lawrence University Saints (1-1) kept
a safe distance between themselves and the Southern Vermont College
Mountaineers (0-2) in the consolation game of the Williams
Invitational on Saturday, leading by 10 or more for most of their
99-85 victory.
The Saints shot a blistering 51% from the field in the first
half to take a 55-43 lead. First-year guard Ralph Temgoua led
the way with 15 points on six of seven shooting in the first half,
and big man Richard Williams added ten.
Guard Lance Spratling again led the offensive charge for SVC,
contributing 13 points in the first half but, like the rest of the
Mountaineers, struggled from the field in going 3 for 9.
Southern Vermont finished the half shooting 42%.
The Saints seemed poised to pull away early in the second half,
stretching their lead to 16 points barely a minute in, 59-43.
The streak forced an SVC timeout, from which the Mountaineers
emerged with renewed vigor, putting together a 10-2 run of their
own and in turn forcing the Saints to take a timeout, their lead
now shrunk to less than ten points (61-53).
From there St. Lawrence would take over. Central
New-Yorker and team tri-captain Tom Wopperer drained a three for
the Saints to make it 66-53, and first-year Garrett Sharlow
followed that up moments later with a long ball of his own and a
three-point play off an offensive rebound. The sequence left
the Saints with a 73-55 lead. Another bucket and St. Lawrence
had a 20-point separation.
A late run by SVC whittled the lead down to ten at one point,
but it only served to make things briefly interesting as the Saints
held on to win handily, 101-86.
Temguoa finished the game with 23 points to lead St. Lawrence,
and five other Saints finished in double figures.
SVC's Spratling led all scorers with 25 points, and Deandre
Kennedy-Ebron added 22 for the Mountaineers.
