KEENE, NH - The Keene State men's soccer team scored the lone
goal of the game just 12:51 in, unfortunately for the Owls it was
an own goal and gave the visiting Williams College Ephs a 1-0
victory Tuesday. The win improves the Ephs to 5-1 (3-0 NESCAC),
while the Owls fall to 3-5-2.
The Williams score came off of a Charles Romero cross that was
collected by Pierre Meloty-Kapella whose shot on goal was
redirected by a Keene State defender past the Owl Keeper, Peter
Kersker (5 saves).
"It was a wild and woolly affair," stated Eph head coach Mike
Russo. "The first 7-8 minutes they had us back on our heels, but we
kept our heads and played better as the half continued. In the
second half Keene again started strong and it took us a while to
get organized."
Besides the goal garnering gaffe by the Owls the two teams were
statistically locked in shots (Williams: 14, Keene State: 13),
corner kicks (Williams: 4, Keene State: 3), fouls (Williams: 18,
Keene State: 18), and saves (Williams: 6, Keene State: 5).
"Conor Smith, our central back, did not play for us tonight, but I
thought our back four played well throughout the game," said Russo.
The closeness of the contest led to increasingly competitive
play which finally bubbled over in the games waning moments, when a
scuffle led to the awarding of a pair of red cards to Williams'
Daniel Curbelo-Ziedman and Keene State's Stephen Attardo. Keene
State had previously received two yellow cards in the match.
The Ephs next play Saturday, October 4th, where they
will try to make it three straight victories and stay undefeated in
NESCAC play when they host the Trinity Bantams.
