MEDFORD, MA -- The Williams College volleyball
team (21-8) defeated the Tufts Jumbos in the 2009 NESCAC
Championship. The Ephs, who lost to Tufts three times earlier this
season, took down the Jumbos 3-0 (25-19, 29-27, 32-30). Today's
victory marks the seventh NESCAC win for the Ephs in nine
conference championships.
Although the team won in three straight sets, the victory did
not come without tremendous effort from both teams. “We had
to fight for every point. It was a battle against a strong and
talented Tufts team,” said head coach Christi Kelsey.
“This was a huge win for us.”
This was perhaps the most impressive game of the season for the
Ephs. In game one, seniors Chelsea Kubal and Andrea Scioscia set
the pace for the team with solid performances on service. In her
last NESCAC championship, team captain Kubal smashed 10 kills and
picked up 18 digs for her team. Juniors Emily Avis, Kate Anderson
and Nicole Ballon-Landa provided solid strength of offense today,
posting 46 assists, 18 kills, and 10 kills and 6 blocks,
respectively.
Despite gaining an early advantage in game three, the top-seeded
Jumbos were outlasted by the second-seeded Ephs. A serving error on
the side of Tufts sealed the three set victory for the Ephs.
"As a team everyone stepped up. I'm very proud of this
team and their drive to pull out the NESCAC
Championship,”said coach Kelsey.
Today's win was the ninth overall NESCAC championship for the
Ephs, who will receive an automatic bid to next weekend's
NCAA regional hosted by Tufts. The Jumbos (28-4) are expected to
receive an at-large bid to the tournament.
