WALTHAM, MA –
The Williams College volleyball team (2-0) went undefeated on day
one of the Brandeis Invitational Tournament. Wins of 3-0 over Rhode
Island College (25-10, 25-13, 25-16) and 3-1 over tournament host
Brandeis (20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-22) give the Ephs positive
momentum as they head into day two, facing UMass-Boston and Trinity
College.
“Our match against RIC gave us the chance to get our system
going. It was a good open for us,” said head coach Christi
Kelsey. “We got the chance to feel confident with each other
on the court.”
Junior hitters Kate Anderson (18 kills) and Nicole Ballon-Landa
(16 kills) helped the Ephs maintain a solid lead over RIC
throughout the match, while setter Emily Avis posted 45 assists. In
the back row, senior defensive specialist Andrea Scioscia led the
defense with 9 digs.
The second match of the day was an intense match against a solid
Brandeis team that entered with a 6-1 record. Although the Ephs
dropped the first game 20-25, the purple pulled through to topple
Brandeis in three straight sets. Anderson (16 digs, 14 kills),
Ballon-Landa (14 kills), Scioscia (14 digs), and Avis (43 assists)
gave solid performances, as did senior Chelsea Kubal (13 digs, 13
kills).
Coach Kelsey says that the team “got down on themselves in
the first game” against Brandeis. The turning point for the
Ephs came in the second game when the Ephs were down 20-17.
“[At this point] we called a timeout and immediately the
girls responded, pushing together to come back and win it 25-23. It
was a real turning point for us. Brandeis is a solid team, but our
team outworked and outplayed the competition for the rest of the
match. It was a great win for us.”
The Ephs begin day two of the Brandeis Invitational tomorrow with
a match against UMass Boston at 11am.
