Box Score
NORTON, Mass - The Williams College men's soccer team overcame a
one goal deficit with two second half scores to beat
nationally-ranked Wheaton College 2-1 in non-conference action
Sunday at Keefe Field.
The victory preserves the Ephs (3-0-1) unbeaten record and marks
their third win in just five days. Wheaton, on the other hand,
which had been unbeaten through eight games and ranked 19th
nationally and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA), fell to 7-1-1.
After knotting the score early in the second period, Williams
recorded the deciding goal in very unlikely fashion. Mid-way
through the 76th minute Eph keeper Andrew Graham (2 saves)
cleared the ball from the Eph end only to watch it find the feet of
Pierre Meloty-Kapella who knocked it home -- giving the Ephs the
lead and awarding Graham the rare assist from the net.
Graham's kick, with less than 15 minutes remaining, managed to
bounce past the Wheaton defense and to a free Meloty-Kapella, who
used a touch to his right to beat Wheaton keeper Cole Davidson (3
saves) and find the bottom right corner of the net with 14:25 left.
Williams held slight edges in shots (Williams: 13, Wheaton: 9)
and corners (Williams: 6, Wheaton: 5), despite once again
committing the bulk of the games infractions (Williams: 13,
Wheaton: 7).
The Ephs fell behind in the games opening moments when David
Ferriero scored the hosts' lone tally not even six minutes into
play. However the Ephs proved unflustered and tested the Lyons
defense throughout the remainder of the half, nearly netting the
equalizer with 12:20 remaining on a bending shot to the upper right
corner from Joe Vella that was barely punched away by Davidson.
Early in the second stanza and deep in the Wheaton zone, Charles
Romero flicked a ball from in front of the left post and over the
Lyon defense to a wide open Will Whiston who promptly finished,
tying it up at 1-1.
Meloty-Kapella nearly made it 3-1 in the 81st minute as another
Graham boot got by the Lyon defense, but Davidson challenged the
Eph forward and took away the angle, thus preventing a shot
attempt.
The Ephs return to conference action when the travel to Colby
next Saturday, September 26th. That game is scheduled for an 11:30
kick off.
