WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – In
their first home match of the 2009-10 season, the Williams College
volleyball team (9-4) defeated the Union College Dutchwomen 3-0
(25-13, 25-17, 25-15). The team looks strong and ready as they head
into a busy weekend, facing off against rivals Amherst and Trinity.
With three service aces at the beginning of
game one, junior setter Emily Avis started a positive momentum that
the Ephs were able to maintain through most of the match. The team
was consistent on both offense and defense. In games one and two,
the Ephs were able to gain a solid lead over Union from the first
whistle.
Junior Emily Levine provided the Ephs with
their first kill of the match (and six more thereafter) with an
effortless assist from Avis (who racked up 38 total). Also leading
in the front row were seniors Chelsea Kubal (12 digs), Melissa Pun
(9 kills), Whitney Hitchcock (7 kills), and junior Nicole
Ballon-Landa (7 kills). On defense, senior Andrea Scioscia led the
Ephs with 16 digs.
After tonight's victory, Head Coach
Christi Kelsey said that this match was a “solid win against
a well coached team, a team that has had a lot of success in the
past.” Still, she stresses that there is much room for
improvement. “There are a few things that we need to improve
going into the weekend, but this was a good match for us as we move
forward.”
October 2, 2009 Williams hosts Amherst in
Chandler Gym. The game begins at 6PM and can be seen on the Internet
