Providence, RI – The
Ephs left Providence Saturday night with a close 5-4 win over Brown
and the number eight national ranking secured.
The Williams seniors led the charge Saturday
morning, with all four upperclassmen winning in solid three game
matches. Co-captains Jennifer Coxe and Toby Eyre finished their
opponents on court 1 with enough time to spare to cheer on senior
Julia Reiser, who only gave up 16 points at the number eight spot.
Caroline Henry did not waste time at number six, winning with her
hard-hitting game and quick drops.
While the seniors showed the strength of their
experience, the underclassmen struggled to find their footing in
their first high-pressure match away from home. At the bottom of
the lineup, sophomores Carolyn Kaemmer and Eliana Saltzman could
not get into their matches, dropping matches at the number
seven and nine spots, respectively.
Number four Laura Henry went down two games, before changing her
game plan and playing smart squash, charging back with wins in the
third in fourth games. Yet, her opponent, Brown senior Sophie
Scherl, held on in the fifth game, winning in a closely contested
12-10 victory. Freshman Alli Rubin also had a hard time at number
five, taking th
e first game with an 11-6 win, before dropping the next three.
With the team score tied at 4 apiece,
sophomore Courtney Bogle held the weight of the match on court two.
Taking her first game with a convincing 11-1 win, Bogle gave the
Williams crowd a scare, dropping the next game 11-8, before closing
out her match in the next two games and securing the team's top
eight ranking, which will qualify them for the 'A'
division at Nationals.
“I couldn't be more proud of how
we played today,” said Coxe. “I'm really excited
to make it into the top division [at Nationals] and finish off this
season strong.”
The Williams' women will hit the courts
at home on Sunday against Cornell.
