AMHERST, MA - The Williams College women's
swimming and diving team (3-1) handed rival Amherst College their
first loss of the season in an away matchup early this afternoon.
The Ephs swept the Lord Jeffs with a final score of 207-91, taking
victories in twelve out of sixteen events and earning four pool
records.
"Even though it wasn't the greatest meet we have every had,
there were several very good performances and it is always good to
win a big rivalry meet in such dominating fashion," said head coach
Steve Kuster. "Caroline Wilson and Logan Todhunter both won or
helped win 4 events today, in particular Wilson's 500 and
Todhunter's 200 Fly were very good swims. KC Ha and Ellen
Ramsey also had solid performances. I also thought that Kera
McClelland did a great job of bouncing back from a tough 1-meter
event to win the 3-meter event. Overall it is a feel good win, but
I know this team will continue to get better."
Success came early for the Ephs, when the quartet of freshman KC
Ha, senior Lisa Cucolo, sophomore Logan Todhunter, and freshman
Caroline Wilson set a pool record to win the 200-yard Medley Relay
in event one (1:47.93) and established an NCAA 'B' time.
Event two was just as impressive for the Ephs, as Wilson
(10:20.56), junior Jillian Hancock (10:44.04), and freshman Rebecca
Maher (10:45.97) claimed the first three spots in the 1000-yard
freestyle.
Victories like that earned in the medley relay were common for
the Ephs throughout today's meet. In the 200-yard butterfly race,
Todhunter (2:01.63), sophomore Bonnie Patchen (2:08.11), and
freshman Kelsey Roggensack (2:09.77) dominated. With their
outstanding performances, both Patchen and Todhunter earned spots
in the NCAA field, as did junior Ellen Ramsey with her NCAA
'B' time of 2:08.81 in the 200-yard backstroke. Setting
another pool record for the Ephs was Wilson again with a time of
4:56.17 in the 500-yard freestyle.
Todhunter also broke a pool record and came in first in the
100-yard fly (55.58), closely followed by teammates Katherine
O'Leary (59.75) and Cucolo (59. 73). The 200-yard breaststroke of
event 11 saw solid performances from senior Christina Metcalf
(2:27.49), Patchen (2.27.52), and senior Lisa Chu (2:31.94), who
came in first, second, and third.
After coming up short against Amherst in the one-meter dive,
senior Kera McClelland came right back to take a win in the
three-meter event. Coach Kuster said, "I thought that Kera did a
great job of bouncing back from a tough one to win the 3 meter
event."
After a strong performance during most of the meet, the Ephs
looked poised going into event 16. Claiming yet another NCAA
'B' time with the team of Wilson, Todhunter, freshman Bryn
Dunbar, and sophomore Carolyn Geller downing three Amherst teams
winning in 3:34.75.
The Ephs next face Wesleyan and Tufts on January 16th at 1PM.
