Medford, MA--The Williams College men's soccer team defeated
Tufts University 1-0 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
Gaston
Kelly won the game for the Ephs (10-1-2, 5-1-2 NESCAC)
with just 15 seconds left in the 1st overtime period when he
rocketed a shot from 25 yards out past keeper Alan
Bernstein to score the only goal of the game.
This marks the 26th time in the last 28 years that Coach Mike
Russo has led the Ephs to at least 10 regular season wins. In
addition, this was the 7th overtime game for the Ephs,
one shy of the NCAA Division III record set by Allegheny College in
1996.
Overall, the Ephs outshot the Jumbo (5-6-2, 3-3-2 NESCAC) 15 to
2. Ephs keeper Peter Morrell had 1 save on the day, while Bernstein
had 8 saves on the day.
Ultimately, the win proves critical in terms of NESCAC standing.
If the Ephs defeat first place Middlebury College (11-2-0, 6-2-0
NESCAC) next Friday, and Bowdoin College (9-1-2, 5-1-2
NESCAC) loses to Tufts, then the Ephs will finish atop the
NESCAC regular season standings and will be the top seed in the
NESCAC Tournament.
