Kiel Bonhomme lifts Ephs past New Paltz St. 3-2 in OT

NEW PALTZ, NY -- The Williams College men's soccer team earned their second win of the season, defeating New Paltz St. 3-2 in an exciting overtime victory.

The Ephs (2-0-0) were saved once again by Kiel Bonhomme. Bonhomme scored the game winning goal, his second in two games, with just seconds left in the first overtime period off a pass from Charlie Romero. Romero also had a fine game for the Ephs, scoring two goals and assisting on the game winning score.

The first half was highlighted with plenty of opportunities for the Ephs, who took a 1-0 lead early in the 1st minute of the game when Charlie Romero beat the New Paltz St. defense to score his first goal of the season. Romero struck again in the second half off a break away in the 66th minute to help the Ephs take a 2-0 lead.

New Paltz St. (3-3-0), however, rallied from the two goal deficit in the second half off headers from Harrison Lane and Jimmy Altadonna in the 82nd and 88th minute respectively to send the game into overtime.

Ultimately, however, the Ephs would not be denied. Williams outshot New Paltz St. 5 to 1 in overtime, dominating the ten minute extra period. Overall the Ephs held a 19 to 13 edge in total shots.

"It was a frustrating game," remarked Coach Russo, "We cannot give a team confidence and let them back into the game. We are living dangerously, but we are glad to move on with a win."

First year Eph goalie Peter Morrell allowed two goals and made four saves in collecting his first collegiate win, while New Paltz's Thomas Viscardi turned aside five Eph shots and allowed three goals.

The Ephs will play again September 18th at NESCAC rival Connecticut College.
