No. 15 Ephs advance to Sweet 16 for third time in last four years

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - After defeating La Roche, 4-0, and No. 17-ranked Scranton, 2-1, during the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the No. 15 Williams College men's soccer team will travel to Northfield, Minnesota, and take on No. 4 St. Olaf in the Sweet 16 on Saturday at 11 a.m.

"I could not be more proud of the team and its performances over the last two games this weekend," said head coach Steffen Siebert. "We are now looking forward to flying to Minnesota to play a very good St. Olaf team."

Sophomore Alex Bethencourt recorded a hat trick for the Ephs (10-4-4, 5-3-2 NESCAC) during the victory over La Roche, and then he scored the game-winning goal during the 24th minute off a free kick against host Scranton. For the third time in the last four years, Williams has advanced to the Sweet 16, as the 2022 team made it all the way to the national championship game.

Williams has received at least one point from 18 different student-athletes this season, headlined by Bethencourt (8 goals, 3 assists), first-year JJ Ruehlemann (8 goals, 1 assist), senior Henry Kirkman (3 goals, 4 assists) and sophomore Lorcan Mitchell (5 goals). The unit has defeated three ranked opponents during the 2025 season, featuring No. 15 Tufts, 3-1, on Sept. 6, No. 13 Bates, 1-0, on Oct. 4 and No. 17 Scranton, 2-1, on Nov. 16.

Macalester (17-4-0, 8-2-0 MIAC) and No. 8 Wheaton (16-1-4, 7-0-1 NEWMAC) will compete during the other Sweet 16 matchup in Minnesota Saturday, with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. The winners will meet in the Eight Eight Sunday at 1 p.m.

St. Olaf (18-2-3, 9-0-1 MIAC) has been led by Ryan Bechtel (10 goals, 12 assists) and Jack Soares (12 goals). Aidan Doyle (11 goals, 10 assists), Declan Rhatigan (10 goals, 6 assists) and Gael Vera (9 goals, 5 assists) have led the charge for Wheaton, while Ondieki Maina (9 goals, 10 assists) and Kasdan Blattman (6 goals, 12 assists) have been impressive for Macalester.
