WILLIAMSPORT, PA- The Williams wrestling team finished fourth at the 23rd Annual Bud Whitehill duals.
The Ephs started their Semi Final match against Ohio Northern University in fine form. The Ephs stormed out of the gates with four straight victories. Carson Brookes was especially dominant scoring a major decision over JP Hoopes. Going into the 157 pound match the Ephs enjoyed a comfortable 13-0 cushion. Ohio Northern refused to give up. The strength of their line up, their mid weights, put together impressive performances defeating the next four Ephs by pin-fall. Williams then found themselves down 11 points going into their final two matches. In order to advance to the finals the Ephs had to pin their final two opponents. Ryan Malo dominated his opponent Matt Alexander and secured a pin in the second period. This left the Ephs down 5 going into the final match. Heavyweight Tom Foote dominated his opponent, but Jusin Southwick wrestled defensively and refused to give up the pin. Foote had to settle for a frustrating 15-5 major decision. This left the Ephs one point shy of a tie. The final score was 24-23.
In spite of their disappointing result the Ephs showed remarkable fortitude and resolve and were able to battle back after Ohio Northern had seemingly taken control of the match.
The third place match between Williams and SUNY Cortland was an opportunity for the Ephs to give a number of talented younger wresters and opportunity to prove themselves. Williams was paced by Josh Mattana and Ryan Malo who both earned decision victories. The Ephs emerged from the SUNY Cortland match considerably deeper with a number of wrestlers performing well on a big stage.
Head Coach Rich Hasenfus was pleased with his team's performance saying, "This weekend was a great experience for the team. In our first day we beat two very talented teams including York College who, going into the weekend was 11th in the nation and boasted an 11-1-1 dual meet record. [Against York] We won seven of ten matches, easily our best performance of the season thus far. York was the first time all year that we were able to field our best ten wrestlers, and we put together a complete performance.
I thought in general the team responded well to the challenge. We have been affected by injuries all year and to put together a strong tournament was very important to us, especially because we are approaching the final stretch of our regular season.
This Wednesday we will be playing my alma mater Springfield College. Both of our teams are banged up but we have a great rivalry against them and we are looking forward to a good battle."
The Ephs return to the mats Wednesday, January 19th against Springfield College. The match will take place in Lasell Gymnasium at 7:00 pm.
