Williams 7th after Day 1 of Bates Carnival

LEWISTON, ME--The Williams College ski team sits in 7th place after the first day of competition at the Bates Carnival. This weekend, which marks the first action in the EISA (Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association) this season, features expanded lineups as teams try to sort out their carnival lineups.

In the women's nordic event, the 5-kilometer freestyle, senior Captain Hannah Hausman was the fastest Eph across the line. Hausman's time of 16:03 was good enough for 29th. Two first-years finished closely behind her, with Elena Luethi in 33rd and Hannah Smith in 34th. Holly Whitney and Christina Knapp, 38th and 39th, respectively, rounded out the Williams pack. Lucy Garrec of UVM took the individual title in a time of 14:08, and the UVM women took team honors for the race as well. The Williams women were eighth, and hope to shift their pack slightly higher on the page in tomorrow's race.

The men's nordic team, racing a 10-kilometer freestyle, was led by Will Wicherski '15. The first-year skied the course in 27:46, which was good for 11th place. There was a gap between Wicherski and the next Eph, however, but junior Ian Nesbitt grabbed 25th to score for the team. Isaac Hoenig was the other Williams skier to crack the top 40, as he finished 37th. Captain Dimitri Luthi '12 was 42nd and Vanya Rybkin '15 was 44th for the Ephs. Middlebury's Patrick Johnson was the individual winner in 26:20, and Dartmouth was the team champion for the event.

The women's alpine team hit the slopes at Sunday River and finished fifth, led by mainstays Geordie Lonza and Laurel Carter. Lonza had two nearly identical runs, 1:18.29 and 1:18.27, to finish 15th. But Carter's second run of 1:17.46 shot her into 11th to lead the team. Shannon Campbell '14 was the next Eph to finish, snagging 32nd. Three DNFs hurt the Ephs, as Kristina Krone, Sarah Cottrill, and Annie Leiter failed to complete both runs.

Carson Houle led the men's alpine team from his spot in 29th after shaving over three seconds from his first run to his second. Victor Major was 33rd and captain Sean Cummiskey was 43rd for the Ephs, who hope to improve from their 11th-place today. UVM won the team events in both alpine races to propel them into the overall lead with 531 points. Dartmouth is second with 418. Williams had 235 points. Action resumes with classic races and the slalom on Saturday, with complete results and comments to follow.
