WILLIAMSTOWN, MA- The Williams wrestling team celebrated senior day with a tri meet against Oswego State and the University of Southern Maine. The Ephs, who gave up two forfeit victories in the 125 pound weight class, fell in both matches.
In their first match of the day against Oswego State the Ephs received a number of strong individual efforts, but were unable to close the gap caused by the forfeit at 125 pounds.
Ces Antista (Matawan, NJ), wrestling at 141 pounds, gutted out a victory against Brad Mayville. Antista was down by a point with a minute left in the match but was able to earn a reversal. Mayville was able to put Antista in a precarious position with 30 seconds in the match. Antista maintained impressive control over Mayville's right leg and was able earn 1:10 of riding time and eeked out a 5-3 victory. Antista advanced his record 19-3.
In the 149 pound class Carson Brooks (Pittsburgh, PA) fell in overtime to Brandon Heffernan. The match was tied up 1-1 going into overtime. In overtime put in precarious position but his opponent ran out of mat space and action was reset to the middle. The wrestles spent the remaining thirty seconds of the period in a hand fight. Starting the second overtime period Heffernan chose bottom and was able to escape. Brookes found himself down a point going into the third overtime period. Heffernan was able to hold on to Brooks' shoe strings and won a narrow 2-1 victory.
Mir Henglin (Newton, MA) put together a great effort in one of the closest matches of the day. It was a back and forth affair that saw Mir down by a single point entering the final frame. Mir attempted an aggressive shot and was caught thirty seconds into the third period.
197 pound senior captain Nikola Mirkovic (Ridgewood, NJ), wrestling in his final home match, put together a strong performance against Edward Rose. Mirkovic was the aggressor and dictated the tempo of the match, earning himself a comfortable 10-2 decision.
Heavyweight Tom Foote (Dunbarton, NH) was the aggressor all match. First period was a hand fight with neither able to gain a takedown. In the second period Foote started on top but got caught a little high on a move and was reversed. Foote was able to quickly escape. Foote earned a second takedown and was able to maintain pressure on Kyle Sheridan's back earning over a crucial minute of riding time. The match entered the third period tied at three. Foote chose down and escaped in four seconds. Foote ended the match after a flurry of scoring with a 9-4 victory. Head Coach Rich Hasenfus was pleased with Foote's performance saying , "Tom did a great job making adjustments after competing against Kyle Sheridan at Lycoming. Sheridan is a big heavyweight, and Tom was really able to use his improved speed and agility to defeat him."
In their second match of the day Williams was unable to enter wresters in four of the ten weight classes. In the matches they did contest, the Ephs wrestled close and won a number of them.
Freshman Kyle Gaffney (York, ME), wrestling against fellow Mainer John Shea, put together a second strong effort for the Ephs. Gaffney earned a third period technical fall, his second on the day. "Kyle had an outstanding day." Hasenfus continued, "He was a little disappointed he didn't get to compete against DiPini, the 4th ranked wrestler in the conference, but he did a good job going out and getting two tech falls for us."
Junior Tom Foote, wrestling against a talented wrestler in Daniel Suarez, was given a tough challenge but was able to go the distance and earned a 10-4 victory. Foote's record this year is now 25-2.
Looking forward Hasenfus said, "Going into New England's we need to get some guys healthy. We have the firepower to make some noise at New England's, we need to get our guys healthy."
The Ephs now have two weeks of training before the NEWA Championship tournament at Wesleyan. Action is slated for Saturday, February 25th.
