STOWE, VT--The Williams ski team wrapped up
action at the UVM Carnival with freestyle races on Sunday at Trapp
Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont.
Dimitri Luthi had the highest finish for Williams in either of
the races, which included skiers of all ages and affiliations from
around the Northeast. Luthi circled the 10k course in 25 minutes,
24 seconds, good for 12th overall and 10th among collegiate
skiers.
"Yesterday was really tough," Luthi said after Sunday's race.
"We had a tough time deciding between klister and kick wax, and our
decision ended up costing us. That made today even more exciting,
because we threw down our best team result this year."
Isaac
Hoenig was next across the line for the Ephs. Hoenig, the
sophomore from Sudbury, Massachusetts, took 24th overall in 26:05.
Ian Nesbitt
capped off a strong weekend in 29th overall and in the top 20 for
the college race, just 7 seconds behind Hoenig.
Vanya Rybkin was right on the heels of the top three. The
first-year from Fairbanks, Alaska was 38th, skiing in 26:21.
"One in the top ten and three in the top twenty made it a
successful day, and I think it shows that we have things headed in
the right direction."
The consistent men's effort led to a fourth-place finish for the
event. Patrick Johnson of Middlebury won for the second consecutive
day, blowing away the field in 24:09--42 seconds ahead of second
place Sam Tarling of Dartmouth.
Dartmouth won the men's event as a team with 113 points.
Williams was fourth with 79 points.
The women's team had a harder time on Sunday, skiing to a
9th-place team finish.
Hannah
Smith provided a bright spot for the Ephs, though. The
first-year from Wellesley, Massachusetts was fastest across the
line in the 10-kilometer freestyle race in 31:45.
As with Saturday's classic race, once the first Eph was across
the line the others wasted no time following. Holly Whitney was
59th in 32:01. Christina
Knapp, celebrating her 21st birthday, was 61st, and captain Hannah
Hausman was 63rd. Sophomore Kristen Halvorsen rounded out the
Eph pack in 68th.
Caitlin Patterson from the University of Vermont was the
individual winner for the women, leading her team to victory in the
event with 130 points.
Dartmouth, however, emerged as the overall team champion for the
weekend with 916 points. UVM was 2nd with 735. Williams was
overtaken by Bates on Sunday and finished 6th with 512 points.
