WILLIAMSTOWN – Williams finishes Saturday with a 1-1 record, notching a win versus Colby and a loss against Yale.
The Ephs came back from vacation with a decisive first match – a 9-0 victory over Colby. First up to play were Mia Fry (#8), Caroline Sawin (#6), Alyssa Northrop (#4), and Alli Rubin (#2). Fry, Northrop and Rubin needed just three games to finish off their respective opponents. After losing the first game, Sawin stormed back to take the next three, winning her match 3-1.
Next up came Lily Grant (#9), Hannah Kaemmer (#7), Nicole Feshbach (#5), Ellie O'Neill (#3), andLaura Henry (#1). Grant, Kaemmer, Feshbach, and O'Neill were all able to win their matches 3-0. Senior co-captain Henry had the longest match of the morning, pulling out a 14-12 victory in the fifth game.
"We played good, efficient squash against Colby," commented assistant coach Blair Dils. "It was a great way to start the New Year."
The Ephs then prepared to face their second opponent of the day in Yale. Williams came in as the underdog, and even though the day ended in a 9-0 loss for the Ephs, the women played hard and managed to take some games off of the Bulldogs.
Sawin and Kaemmer, at the number six and seven positions, both were able to take a game off of their Yale opponent, but ended up losing their matches in four games. Northrop came out of the gate strong, taking the first game, but was eventually defeated 12-10 in the fourth game. O'Neill lost her match in a close three games, but showed her strength and endurance in a thrilling 18-16 score in the first game. Yale ended last season as the second ranked team in the nation.
"We wanted to use the opportunity to play a high quality opponent to raise the level of our game and I think we accomplished that," added Dils.
Co-captain Henry was overall happy with the Ephs level of play. "Our win over Colby really showed people kept up with training over break and came back ready to play," said Henry. "We also put up a strong fight against Yale and look forward to playing some great teams over the next few weekends."
Williams will face Bowdoin on Sunday morning in their third and final match of the weekend.
