Cook leads Ephs past Babson at Daytona Beach Shootout

Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, FL. -- Williams College junior Ellen Cook scored 15 of her gmae-high 21 points in the second half Thursday to help the No. 12 Ephs remain unbeaten with a 56-47 victory over Babson in the Daytona Beach Shootout.

Williams (9-0) will face Potsdam State at 4 p.m. Friday in its second scheduled contest in the Florida tournament.

"In the second half, we had better shot selection and we attacked the basket much better," said Ephs head coach Pat Manning. "But we have to do a better job on the boards. Our initial defense was solid, I thought, but they had way too many second chance baskets."

The Ephs never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first half and holding a slight 27-24 lead at the half thanks in part to sophomore Jane Thompson's 11 points.

Cook took over at the start of the second half, draining a three-pointer in the first minute. After a Kristen Ferola lay-up, Cook answered with another trey to give Williams a seven-point lead. A pair of MaryKate O'Brien free throws stretched the lead to nine.

Babson closed within five points a couple of times and had several possessions to get closer, but the Ephs were able to get a stop and finally, Cook hit her third three of the half to make it 42-34 Williams with 6:45 to go. Moments later, Devon Caveney nailed a three-pointer for an 11-point edge.
