BURLINGTON, VT-The Ephs competed at Catamount Open at the University of Vermont this weekend. The women's team placed third behind Dartmouth College and UVM.
In the throwing events Amina Avril placed first in the hammer throw (49.67m). Freshman Bethany Berry (37.33m) and classmate Zatio Kone (19.39m) also competed in the event.
Avril scored big in the shot put, earning the team three points with a second place finish (12.43m). In the discus, Avril's premier event, she placed first with a throw of 40.20m.
Junior Rachel MacLean competed in javelin (22.14m). This was MacLean's fist track meet competing for Williams.
In the high jump, both senior Julie Paschal and freshman Elise Pitmon cleared 1.55m. Pascal beat Pitmon for place fourth because she had fewer attempts than Pitmon. The freshman placed 5th, closely behind Paschal.
Two freshmen had a strong showing in the long jump. Grace Weatherall placed second with a jump of 4.76, and placing third was classmate Bethany Berry (4.53m).
Berry also competed in the triple jump where she placed fourth (9.75m). Freshman Elena Zifkin landed a jump of 9.37m as well.
Freshman Kathryn McNaughton placed third in her first collegiate steeplechase with a time of 11:58.87.
In the 1500m Sophie Chatas crossed the finish line with a time of 5:02.65 and sophomore Emily Gladdis also competed in the event (5:11.75).
Freshman Borah Lim placed seventh in the 800m (2:25.65), and ran the race with senior Rebecca Fine.
In the 5000m freshman Margaret Richardson, crossed the line at 19:47.49 to place fifth.
The Williams sprint squad had several promising performances. In the 400m Ashley Graves ran 59.34 to win the event. Exhausted but happy, Graves exclaimed, "the race was really hard, but I am glad I was able to push through it and score a few points for the team. I am glad I am one step closer to achieving my goals". Junior Amanda Murashige (1:02.05) placed third and Freshman Jessica O'Brien (1:04.44) finished fifth.
In the 200m Graves placed sixth (26.71), followed my Murashige (26.91), junior Annie Lynch (27.07) and Weatherall (27.19).
Annie Lynch also competed in the 100m to placed fourth with a time of 13.04.
Grace Weatherall (16.82), scored points for the Ephs by placing fourth in the 100m hurdles. Sophomore Dianna Mejia (18.44) placed fifth with Pitmon (18.91) placing sixth.
Mejia and Pitmon also competed in the 400m hurdles. Mejia placed third (11:11.03), closely followed by Pitmon (1:11.57) who placed fourth.
The Williams 4x100m relay placed finished with a time of 51:41 placing fourth. The relay was run by Lynch, Murashige, Mejia, and Graves.
Williams ran two 4x400m relay teams. The A team finished second with a time of 4:05.06 (Graves, Murashige, Fine, Lynch). The B team ran 4:16.68 to place 4th (Mejia, O'Brien, Pitmon, Stewart).
Overall sprints coach Howard Powell was pleased with women's performance: "After a busy week of practice, the women's team competed well. We are still making adjustment to several sections of our races and relay legs, but we are making progress. We hit a few qualifying marks today that will carry us well into the championship season."
Next week the Ephs will compete at the UMass Invitational.
