Ephs Fall To Lions

NEW YORK CITY, NY – Women's squash falls for the first time in history to Columbia. The Ephs had many tough and close matches across the entire lineup, but nevertheless fell 9-0 to the Lions.

The first matches of the day brought a shred of hope for Williams, as two out of the three matches went to five games. Both Ellen Coombe (#6) and co-captain Ellie O'Neill (#3) had thrilling comebacks after finding themselves down 2-0 and 2-1 respectively. However, neither player was able to finish off the match and each lost in five games.

Maria Pylypiv (#8) also was able to get a game off of her opponent, but unfortunately could not get two more and lost in four games. Last up to play was co-captain Alyssa Northrop (#1). Northrop traded games with her Columbia counterpart until it was tied at 2-2. However, like her teammates, Northrop was unable to take the fifth game and lost 3-2.

"I'm really proud of the team," commented O'Neill. "After yesterday's close match against Middlebury (Williams won 5-4), we came out and fought hard again against Columbia, even though the score wasn't reflective. Alyssa had a particularly impressive weekend, clinching the five game match against Midd and then playing another five game match against a great player today."

Williams will travel to New Haven next weekend to play George Washington University at 7:30 pm on Friday the 24th and Franklin & Marshall at 1:30 pm on Saturday the 25th. Both matches are against improved opponents and are important matches to determine rankings and seedings for nationals. The Ephs weekend does not stop there though, as Williams will travel to Amherst on Sunday the 26th to play Amherst and Wesleyan in search for the 2013-14 Little Three Title. Williams has won the title the past 14 years.
