Box Score MIDDLETOWN, CT – Wesleyan University defeated Williams College 27-7 to
improve to 5-2 on the year. With the loss Williams is now 2-5 on the year.
Late in the first quarter, the Ephs' defense stood tall forcing a field-goal attempt
after the Cardinals recovered a punt return fumble at the Williams 16-yard line. The
field goal was missed, keeping the score at 0-0.
After a scoreless first quarter, Wesleyan got the scoring started with a 21-yard
touchdown pass from first-year quarterback Mark Piccirillo to sophomore receiver
Eric Meyreles to take the a 7-0 lead with 6:42 left in the first half.
The Cardinals extended their lead before halftime to 14-0 with a five-yard
touchdown run by junior running back Lou Stevens with just over a minute before
the end of the half.
After the half, Wesleyan kept the scoring going when sophomore quarterback
Gernald Hawkins scored from four yards out on a quarterback keeper with 8:02
remaining in the third quarter. A missed extra point kept the Wesleyan lead at 20-0.
Williams nearly scored late in the third quarter with a long run by first-year running
back Noah Sorrento, but Wesleyan junior defensive back Justin Sanchez was able to
force a fumble before Sorrento reached the end zone keeping the Wesleyan lead to
20-0.
Wesleyan would score again with a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore running
back Jaylen Berry bringing their lead to 27-0.
Williams ended the Cardinals' shutout bid and capped the scoring on the day with a
three-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Austin Lommen to senior wide
receiver Darrias Sime, A 54-yard run by first-year running back Eric Smith keyed the
Ephs scoring drive.
Jaylen Berry ran for 70 of Wesleyan's 166 rushing yards on the day. The Cardinals
notched 166 yards though the air.
Austin Lommen was able to throw for 150 yards. Noah Sorrento was able to run for
his first career 100-yard game and put up 105 of the Ephs' 150 rushing yards.
Senior linebacker James O'Grady led the Williams defense with eight tackles.
Junior linebacker Jordan Stone and senior linebacker Jon Spivey were the leading
tacklers for the Cardinals with eight tackles each.
The Cardinals now own a 3-game win streak versus the Ephs.
Next Saturday, Williams will take on rival Amherst in Williamstown for their
homecoming game and final game of the season. Wesleyan will end their season
with an away game against Trinity.
