Ephs Top Trinity 53-0 in First Dual Match of the Season

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College wrestling team (1-0) opened the dual match portion of their season with a 53-0 win over Trinity (0-2) in historic Lasell Gym.

Trinity came into the match off a third place finish at the Southern Maine Invitational and the Bantams are 0-1 on the year having lost their season-opening match versus East Stroudsburg 40-6.

The Ephs entered their first dual match of the year off a fourth place finish at the York (PA) College Invitational where Jake Savoca (149), Jorge Lopez (157), and Chris Chorzepa (184) won titles. Lopez was named the most outstanding wrestler at the invitational. All three of the Ephs are ranked nationally with Lopez #1 at 157, Chorzepa #2 at 184 and Savoca #8 at 149.

Williams recorded seven pins on the night. "It started with the leadership of the captains Jorge Lopez, Tim Garripoli, Anthony Brooks, and Chris Chorzepa," said Eph head coach Scott Honecker. When your captains give you three pins and a tech you're going to win the dual."

Williams senior Dan Seidita at 133 battled back from a 4-2 deficit heading into the third round to claim a 5-4 win over Joe Penna with a late takedown in the closest match of the evening.

"The most encouraging thing to see was the guys applying the techniques and concepts that we've been focusing on in the wrestling room," Honecker added.

Honecker also had praise for first year heavyweight Sebastian Dziadkiewic. "Sebastian did a great job and we're going to need that out of him all season long," noted Honecker. "It's a major challenge to manage that weight disparity, but with Sebastian's athleticism he'll be in every match if he stays in good positions."

Jorge Lopez, the ninth Division III wrestler at Williams to reach the 100-win plateau, recorded his 100th win capturing the 157 title at the York College (PA) New Standard Invitational last weekend. Corey Paulish '11 is the all-time leader in NCAA DIII wins at Williams with 129 (129-35, .787). Tonight Lopez notched his 101st win with a pin of Jack Reilly at 2:13.

Trinity's Francis Corvino posted a 7-4 win over the Ephs' Jonathan Berry in an exhibition bout at 157.

Next up for the Bantams is the Stevens Institute Quad on January 3, while the Ephs will return to action in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where they will compete in the two-day Citrus Invitational Dec. 29 and 30.

Commenting on the upcoming Citrus Invitational Honecker stated, "With Augsburg the defending national champions in the field we're going to be tested by the best guys in the country. We need to continue to grow as a team. When we get back from Florida we have 20 duals in 40 days."
