WATERVILLE, ME- Williams somen's squash was victorious against Colby and Bates, blanking Colby 9-0 and beating Bates 8-1.
After a long bus ride last night to the beautiful state of Maine, the Eph squash women were ready to face one of thier fiercest rivals, Bates in the morning. Favored to win, the Ephs were nonetheless ready for a scrappy close match with a team that has historically always fought hard.
Esther Baek, at the number four position, hit two nicks during her match and ultimately pulled ahead of her opponent to win in 4. Sarah Willwerth at the number seven position had a particularly crisp, efficient win in 3 games. Co-captain Nicole Friedman at the number one position did a great job defeating a very strong opponent on the exhibition match, winning in 4 games on a beautiful volley drop. Abby Leblanc at the number five position won in 4, fighting her way back after being down in the first game. Overall, a great showing at Bates for the Ephs, especially considering how matches with Bates historically have been closer than expected.
Next on the day's agenda was the match at Colby. The match was a relatively fast sweep; not a single Williams player dropped a game.
The Williams girls women ready to take on their final opponent during this Maine weekend tomorrow at Bowdoin.
Assistant coach Blair Dils remarked, "We knew Bates was much better than their ranking indicated. It's always hard making the trek to Maine and trying to play our best squash. We took care of business with strong performances up and down the lineup."
Co-captain Nicole Friedman said, "We had a fantastic showing today on the women's side by decisively beating long-time rival Bates. Everyone stepped up and played great squash. After a tiring morning, the team was able to use the momentum to beat Colby 9-0. We are looking forward to continuing this energy for Bowdoin tomorrow."
The match scores from the teams' Bates match will be posted when they have been entered on the CSA website.
