New London, CT – Williams (8-2, 3-2 NESCAC) scored in bunches to win its tenth straight game in the all time head to head matchup versus Connecticut College (1-7, 0-6 NESCAC). The win was important in the race for the NESCAC playoffs, as the Ephs move above .500 in conference, good for 5th place.
Catherine Torres scored the first goal 1:17 into the game, taking a pass from the left side and guiding it into the air past Jackie Mountford, the Connecticut College goalie. Less than a minute later, Shea van den Broek capitalized on Mountford diving in a save attempt, popping up the ball over her head into the open net.
Mountford settled in on senior day for the Camels, making impressive stops on shots by Faith Stineman and Torres. Abby Krahmer provided a spark off the bench, finally maneuvering the ball past midfield to create some opportunites. Siobhan Morrissey and Linda Bibeau made sure to shift the game towards the Ephs' offensive half heading into the second quarter.
To start the second, Mountford was forced out of the net to make a tough save on Molly Hellman's shot attempt. The defense of the Camels couldn't stay intact, as Hannah Webster took a yellow card. Van den Broek scored her ninth goal of the season, picking up loose change after Torres wound up and sent a shot careening off a stray stick. About two minutes later, the Ephs tacked on their 4th goal, keeping the momentum on their side. Kelly McCarthy dove on a shot from Emily Batchelor before Mountford could make a play on it. Liz Scarcella of Williams scored a back-breaking 5th goal to beat the buzzer before the break.
The Ephs opened the second half with two consecutive corners. For the second one, Torres avoided the outstretched arms of multiple Camel defenders, placing a one-timer in the left corner of the net. Keeping up with the theme of scoring in bunches, Elizabeth Welch scored her second goal in as many games soon after Torres' goal.
Connecticut College broke their scoring drought with 8:23 left in the 3rd, as Gates Tenerowicz couldn't clear the ball with a kick save, leading to Elektra Rodger's first goal of the season. The second half scoring was even after Sydney Cresta scored at the 48:56 mark. It was too little too late as Williams took the win on the road.
Carson Stephenson was in goal for Williams in the first half, but didn't have to make a save. Tenerowicz had one save out of 3 shots faced in the second, while Mountford played the duration of the game, saving a whopping 17 out of 24 shots faced. Torres and Welch each had 4 shots on goal, while Batchelor and Stineman both had 3 saved by Mountford. Payton Ahola came off the bench to fire 2 shots towards the net.
Williams will come back from the three game road trip to face Colby College at Williamson Field on October 9th at noon.
