Men's Cross Country Eph Spotlight Video: Will Spollen & John Lucey

Junior Biology major Will Spollen was remote last fall, but on campus last spring. Last fall he enjoyed mushroom foraging with his younger brother. He chose Williams because of the people he met on his visit and the location. His visit also showed him how energized Eph students were about what they were doing.

One team tradition is the XC runners who are not running in the NCAA Championship drive to the event to support the team, which is usually in the middle of the country and this year it is in Louisville. Additionally the team runs up Mt. Greylock each year and of course there is legendary T Bear.

Sophomore chemistry major John Lucey knew when he visited that the team members were the kind of people he would enjoy spending many hours with.

Lucey is looking into research opportunities on campus during Winter Study and over the summer. He also commented on a history class he took with Professor Chris Waters that was so different from the history classes he had taken before coming to Williams that it sparked a strong interest in the course and made it a most enjoyable learning experience.

Last summer Spollen did research with professor  Damian Turner, an immunologist. They worked on a cure for mice asthma. Outside of his research he enjoyed floating in tubes down the river and going on runs with friends.

He also mentions an influential class he took outside his major in Economics with Professor Owen Thompson and how it has influenced his life outside the classroom.

After Williams Spollen hopes to have a lot of fun and have a positive impact on other people by becoming a doctor, but first he wants to join the Peace Corps and then spend some time in a Buddhist Monastery.

Lucey's future plans include enrolling in graduate school and either pursuing a career in chemical engineering or biotechnology.

Before a race Spollen likes to drink a lot of coffee, listen to Bruce Springsteen's song New York City Serenade, and he eats sea salt to keep his blood pressure up.

Lucey always wears the same socks with the Colorado flag on them, he tucks his laces into his running shoes, and touches the ground.
