Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Williams Tops Worcester State 70-57

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. -- The Williams Men's Basketball team took down Worcester State on Thursday night to improve to 6-0 on the season.

The Ephs had four players reach double digit scoring. Leading the way was sophomore Nate Karren with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Cole Prowitt-Smith scored 12, going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line along the way. Senior Jovan Jones and first-year Declan Porter scored 11 and 10 respectively.

Williams coach Kevin App spoke on the win for the Ephs, "I thought it was another game where certain stretches we played phenomenal and other stretches we made some bad decisions. I'm proud of these guys, it was a two point game under ten minutes and we haven't been in that situation since game one. They didn't flinch, they buckled down, picked it up on defense and then made play after play on the offensive end."

The first half saw eight different Eph players get into the scoring column. Leading them was the sophomore duo of Cole Prowitt-Smith and Nate Karren. Prowitt-Smith scored eight in the first half, including 4-4 from the free throw line. Karren scored six points and pulled down 4 rebounds.

The Ephs got off to a solid start, hopping out to a 10-2 in the first four minutes of the game.

Williams was solid defensively in the first half, allowing just 13 points in 13 minutes and out rebounding the Lancers 25-18.

The Ephs controlled the tempo well in the first half and at one point were up as many as seventeen points. The Lancers were able to get back in it, going on an 8-0 run to finish the half.

Williams took a seven point lead going into the break, 34-27.

App spoke on the defensive effort of the team, "It's what we've been talking about all week, building that team defensive mentality. I thought for long stretches on Sunday we had it and then for longer stretches today. That's what it's going to take to win games in our league."

Williams maintained a steady lead through the first minutes of the second half, but a 6-0 run by the Lancers brought them back to within two with 12:36 remaining in the game. Senior Marc Taylor was able to stop the Lancer's momentum with a three pointer to put the lead back to five.

The Ephs went on a 7-0 run with 8 minutes left in the game. After a strong basket from first-year Brandon Roughley, senior Jovan Jones grabbed an offensive board next possession and put it back up for two. Followed by a three pointer from first-year Declan Porter and the Ephs lead returned to double digits, 61-50.

Williams was able to maintain control of the game from that point on, finishing the game on a 16-7 run and ending with a final score of 70-57.

Coach App discussed the team's resiliency on the night, "This game was another learning experience for these guys and I think they handled it great. When the shots aren't falling you want to hang your head, when the other team is making a run you want to hang your head and try to do too much. We actually stopped trying to do too much and got back to our principles, kept the ball moving, and kept shooting with confidence and we made some huge ones down the stretch."

The Ephs take on Wesleyan on the road on Saturday, December 4 at 5 pm.
