Malden, MA- In tonight's matchup, Williams (9-7-0, NESCAC 9-4-0) beat the Tufts Jumbos (3-11-1, NESCAC 3-7-1) 3-1 extending the Eph's winning streak against the Jumbos to five. One goal in each period, scored by Jarid Sutton,
Ben Lawrick, and
Tyler Cooligan, respectively, made up the three Eph goals.
Â
In the goal for the Ephs is senior
Cosimo Lazzarino who sports a .867 save percentage. The Jumbos came out strong with goalie Ryan Welch, who was recently named player of the week after his shut-out win against Middlebury last Friday.
Â
The first period scoring started out slow until the Ephs were given a power play opportunity. With 3 minutes and 25 second left in the period, Eph Freshman Jarid Sutton, assisted by
Sean Clarke and
Nicholas Rashkovsky, was able to tally the sole goal of the period. The Jumbo's suffered from heavy penalties scattered through the period and were unable to be offensively aggressive. After 20 minutes of action the Ephs emerged with a one-shot lead over the Jumbos.
Â
The second period echoed the first with one power play goal made in favor of the Ephs. Half-way through the second period after a penalty against the Jumbos, the Ephs had a crucial one-man advantage against the opposing team. At 10:56,
Ben Lawrick received a solid pass from teammate
Jack Sabre to make a one-timer straight through Welch's pipes to give the Ephs their second goal of the game. The Jumbos were unable to gain any momentum and left for the locker room after 40 minutes of play down by two goals.
Â
In the third, the Ephs continued to drive their offensive line. At 6:33, the Jumbos were creeping into the Eph defensive zone, but
Tyler Cooligan, assisted by
Connor Kucharski, swiped the puck, and skated away to light it up for the third goal of the game. Desperate to make up the deficient, Jumbo head coach Pat Norton pulled Welch to put another skater in play. Combined with a penalty against the Ephs, the Jumbos were able to score their first goal at 14:26. Tom Tresca, assisted by Tyler Sedlak and Andrew Maynard, was credited for the goal. However, with only 6 minutes left in the game, the Jumbos were unable continue off their momentum and the Ephs would leave victorious.
Â
The Ephs will be back this week on Friday 7pm against Wesleyan University at home.
"The guys did a good job playing a game away on a Monday. They have been working hard and being on the road is always tougher to play," said head coach
Bill Kangas. "Overall, as a team, I thought we played well in all three zones and it was nice to have a couple special team goals. In the net, I felt that Cos was exceptional and made some crucial saves. With that said, it is always a team effort, and we are feeling good going into February".
