WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. - A goal by Amherst's Paige DiBiase in the fourth quarter seals the victory as Amherst (6-2, 3-2 NESCAC) defeats Williams (5-3, 2-3 NESCAC) 3-1 on Williamson Field.
Ephs senior goalkeeper Carson Stephenson had a stellar game with three crucial saves despite the result. Stephenson made a spectacular save 6:05 into the game to deny the Mammoths an early lead. With less than 30 seconds left in the first quarter, Amherst's Sam Maynard was there to take a shot but Stephenson kicked it out to deny Amherst the lead and keep the game leveled going into the second quarter.
Amherst were awarded a penalty kick at the 21:07 mark. Beth Williamson stepped up to take the shot for Amherst. Stephenson got a foot on it but it was not enough to keep it out and the Mammoths took a 1-0 lead. 24:26 into the game, Amherst found themselves 2-0 up thanks to a rocket in the top left corner from Muffie Mazambani.
The Ephs were more aggressive in the third quarter as senior Emily Batchelor managed to get a shot off but was denied a goal by Amherst's goalkeeper Sara Nidus. 36:46 into the game, junior Liz Scarcella found senior Faith Stineman who put it in the back of the net and cut Amherst's lead in half.Â
With just 4:15 remaining in the game, Paige DiBiase restored the 2 goal lead for Amherst and the Ephs eventually fell to the Mammoths 3-1. Â
Williams had 9 shots with 5 on goal while Amherst had 7 shots with 6 on target. Each team had 3 penalty corners on the day.
"Disappointing loss to a very competitive Amherst team" stated head coach Alix Barrale. "We started off slow and played tentatively and let Amherst capitalize on 2 fast breaks. We found ourselves in the hole starting the second half. However, our second half was impressive. We out-shot them 9-1 and had many threatening opportunities. We will continue to work at putting 4 quarters together, much like we did at Bowdoin and Colby. Skidmore will be a great non conference test for us."
The Ephs will look to bounce back on Thursday, October 6th, at 7:00 PM against Skidmore College on Williamson FIeld.
