Ephs Edge the Cardinals 2-1

MIDDLETOWN, CONN. -- Senior Catherine Torres scored the eventual winning goal in the second quarter as the Ephs (8-3, 4-3 NESCAC) took down the Cardinals (3-9, 1-7 NESCAC), 2-1.

Senior Kelly McCarthy got Williams on the board first at the 9:49 of the first quarter  after many Eph opportunities early on in the game. First year Kiki Higgins applied pressure in the shooting area that saw Williams gain possession. Higgins took a shot but Wesleyan goalkeeper Audrey Pace was there to block it. McCarthy was in just the right space to get the rebound and put the Ephs on top 1-0.

With just a little over five minutes remaining in the second quarter, senior Catherine Torres found the back of the net from a direct insert of a penalty corner from first year Pilar Torres. Torres took a hard shot into the bottom right corner and gave the Ephs a two goal lead at halftime.

Wesleyan came out with high intensity in the second half of the game. Wesleyan's Diana Schwarz got a goal back for the Cardinals 34 seconds into the third quarter to make it a one goal game.

"That was a nail biter," said Head Coach Alix Barrale after the game. "Wesleyan is a force and really turned up the pressure in the second half. We remained poised under pressure and were able to hang in there for the win. We had lots of offensive opportunities especially in the first half. So excited for another NESCAC win, looking forward to playing Montclair State tomorrow."

The Ephs out shot the Cardinals 18-5. Williams put 13 of those shots on target while Wesleyan had one shot on goal.

The Ephs will look to get another home win when they host Montclair State University in non-conference tilt on Sunday, October 16 at 1:00 PM, on Williamson Field.
