Williams Splits Two Matches at SUNY Cortland

Cortland, NY - Williams College (9-6) competed in a Saturday doubleheader against Clarkson University (11-9) and SUNY Cortland (15-4).

To open the day, Williams took on Clarkson University and came away with a victory after five sets.

The Ephs raced out to an early 7-1 advantage in the fifth and final set, which they never relinquished as they secured a 15-11 set win. Although the Golden Knights briefly threatened towards the end of the set, narrowing the deficit to three points, the Ephs were able to close out the set on a Clarkson error.

In the first set, it was Clarkson that got off to a fast start as they built an early 6-2 lead. While the Golden Knights expanded their lead to 14-10, Williams then went on a six point run to take the lead, led by three consecutive kills from senior Christina Conforti. However, the Ephs' lead did not last long, as they were forced to call a timeout after they fell behind 20-17. Williams used the timeout well though, as they finished the set on an 8-1 run, including three consecutive service aces by junior Lauren Kauppila, to take the first set 25-21.

While the second set was close in the early going, the Ephs used a 7-0 run to establish a 16-9 advantage with some quality serving from senior Kiley Wallace. From there, Williams controlled the action for the remainder of the set as they eased to a 25-16 second set victory, with the clinching point coming on a tip kill from junior Marit Hoyem

The third set was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams using large runs to build and erase leads. After Williams took a 12-8 lead with a service ace from sophomore Sidra Wohlwend, the Golden Knights went on a 5-0 run to take the lead, although the Ephs would quickly retake the lead. While the set continued in this fashion for a while, Clarkson went on a five point run to claim the third set, closing it out with back to back kills from first year Marin Hangliter.

The fourth set was close from start to finish, with neither team able to build an advantage larger than three points. The Ephs' faced their largest deficit of the set early on, down 10-7, although they used a 4-0 run to quickly take the lead. While Williams had a late 22-21 advantage, Clarkson was able to end the set on a 4-1 run to claim the fourth set 25-23, tying the match at two sets apiece. Marit Hoyem led the way for the Ephs in this set with 5 kills, although first year Helen Qian was not far behind with 4 kills.

Clarkson leaders were: sophomore Allyson Treichel with 15 kills, senior Isabelle Crow with 39 assists, and senior Emma Baxter with 20 digs. Williams leaders were: Marit Hoyem with 13 kills, Lauren Kauppila with 34 assists, and Sidra Wohlwend with 24 digs.

For their second match of the day, Williams faced SUNY Cortland and lost in straight sets.

Although Williams kept it close in the early going of the third set, the Red Dragons used a 7-0 run to blow the set open, and the Ephs were never quite able to recover from there. SUNY Cortland claimed the third set 25-13 with a solo block from graduate student Zoe Staats.

In the first set, SUNY Cortland stormed out to an early 9-3 lead. While the Ephs used a 4-0 run to get back into the game, the Red Dragons went on a run of their own to open up a 14-7 advantage. Although the Ephs made a late effort to tighten the set up, SUNY Cortland came away with the 25-17 set victory after a Williams error. Celia Adams led the way for the Ephs with four kills in the set.

Both teams had some quality serving to start the second set, with each team racking up two service aces in the first six points. From there, the Ephs were able to keep the set within reach until the very end, as they were only behind 19-17 at one point. However, the Red Dragons then proceeded on a 6-1 run to secure the second set 25-18.

SUNY Cortland leaders were: Zoe Staats with 10 kills, senior Meadow Wittman with 21 assists, and Meadow Wittman with 8 digs. Williams leaders were: Celia Adams with 10 kills, Lauren Kauppila with 11 assists, and Lauren Kauppila and Sidra Wohlwend with 5 digs each.

Reflecting on the day's matches, Eph head coach Christi Kelsey remarked, "I was really proud of how our team came out against Clarkson. We put together two really focused and competitive sets out of the gate which was a great response coming off our loss to Tufts last night. We got a little inconsistent in the third set and Clarkson worked their way back into the match. Our team stepped up though in a big way to control the fifth set and close out the match. As for Cortland, they might be the best team we have played to date. Pieces of our game looked good at times, but we struggled a bit to string points together and against a team like Cortland, you have to do that. Overall this was a good road trip for us today to see two traditionally strong out-of-region teams, and it will help us as we get ready for what is ahead of us in the rest of October."

The Ephs will be back in action against MIT at the New England Challenge in Cambridge, MA on Friday, October 15th at 7:00 PM EST.
