Williams Triumphs over Bates 41-28 at Home

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. -- Williams (2-5) and Bates (2-5) faced off on a beautiful Saturday afternoon  in a game that featured lots of excitement through the air. Williams bounced back after a some recent losses with an impressive run and pass performance, tallying 154 rushing yards and 276 in the air.

The Ephs wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on their first possession from 75 yards on a deep crossing route from Dan Vaughn to Cameron Lee. After a PAT from Ivan Shuran, the score was 7-0 less than 30 seconds into the game.

Bates' ensuing offensive effort was thwarted on the second play of the drive by an interception by first year Safety George Papadopoulas that was returned back to the Bates 25. A few plays later, Dan Vaughn connected with first year TE Sam Jaffee for a 14 yard touchdown pass over the middle. A wide right extra point brought the score to 13-0.

Bates cut into the lead on a 5 yard touchdown pass from Colton Bosselait to Steven Guerrett after a 10-play, 92 yard drive. 13-7 Williams.

Williams scored twice more before the halftime break with rushing touchdowns from senior RB Joel Nicholas and Dan Vaughn

After Bates blocked a Williams punt that squirted all the way back to Williams' 10, Bates QB Bosselait ran the ball in from 3 yards out just before the half. The score going into halftime was 27-14, Williams.

The Eph defense made a tremendous effort today, securing three takeaways, their most of the season. Interceptions came from Papadopoulos, Chaz Cotton, and Rocco Giandomenico and all three played a pivotal role in setting up the offense for success and momentum shifting drives.

Senior Captain Ian Devine said after the game, "I was most proud of a bunch of different guys stepping up during the game. A few of the freshmen came through in a bunch of different places on both sides of the ball that changed the momentum of the game." Devine ended the game with a handful of tackles, and increased his sack count to a team high 5.

Cotton, a senior defenseman, finished the day with 9 total tackles and an interception. Junior CJ Vilfort led Williams with 2 solo sacks, both drive changing plays.

Cotton noted after the game how important it was for the team to be firing on all cylinders, "All the way across the board the defensive players did their job and got to the quarterback forcing him to scramble the whole game, and the offense held it down and scored in a lot of big situations."

Williams continued their offensive momentum after a few punts early in the second half, and a 36 yard Bates touchdown pass from Bosselait to Christian Olivi to narrow the Ephs' lead.

Vaughn and the Williams offense wasted no time in striking back, with Vaughn connecting with Cam Lee for his second touchdown toss of the day that covered 66 yards. Lee broke through the second layer of defense and was off to the races. Vaughn also connected with Sam Jaffee in the middle of the fourth quarter for Jaffee's second touchdown of the game, this time on a 37-yard completion down the left seam.

Dan Vaughn finished the game with an impressive 236.9 Quarterback Ranking (QBR), on 11-20 passing with 276 yards and 4 touchdowns. Vaughn also rushed for an impressive 123 yards on 20 carries and scored a touchdown. Cam Lee led all receivers with 3 catches for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Bates scored once more before the game concluded on an out route from Christian Olivi from 3 yards out.

The final score was 41-28.

Williams will travel to Middletown, Conn. next week to take on the Wesleyan Cardinals at 1pm in their first of two Little Three contests that annually end the season.
