Williams Falls in 4 Sets to No. 12 Wesleyan

Middletown, CT - Williams College (7-4, 4-2 NESCAC) traveled to Connecticut to face Wesleyan University (13-1, 5-0 NESCAC). Wesleyan took down Williams in four sets.

The fourth set was back and forth in the early action, as the Ephs and Cardinals traded the lead back and forth several times. However, Wesleyan exploded on an 11-3 run to build a 21-13 lead. Although the Ephs brought the game back within five points, Wesleyan came away with the set win 25-19 off a service error from Williams. On the offensive end, junior Celia Adams led the way for the Ephs with four kills in the set.

In the first set, Williams jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage behind a strong service run from junior Marit Hoyem. While the Ephs held on to the lead for a while longer, the Cardinals went on a 7-1 run to take the lead, forcing a Williams timeout. While the Cardinals maintained their lead over the next few points, another timeout from the Ephs helped swing the momentum back in their favor, with consecutive service aces from senior Kiley Wallace helping Williams retake the lead at 21-20. The Ephs would never relinquish their advantage, and a powerful kill from senior Morgan Persky helped Williams claim the first set 25-22.

During the second set, this time it was the Cardinals who raced out to an early lead, building a 5-1 advantage in the early going. Wesleyan would end up leading the set from start to finish, as they won the set 25-16 with a solo block from junior Mariko Tanaka. Although the Ephs kept it close for the first half of the set, the Cardinals surged in the second half to tie the match at one set each.

In the third set, Williams kept a narrow lead in the beginning, establishing a 9-5 advantage. However, Wesleyan went on a massive 12 point run to blow the set open and take a 17-9 lead. Although the Ephs made a late comeback with a 5-1 run that included a service ace from sophomore Sidra Wohlwend, it wasn't enough in the end as the Cardinals took the third set 25-19.

Wesleyan leaders were: first year Sophia Lindus with 18 kills, senior Grace Dennis with 40 assists, and graduate student Jenna Otaola with 14 digs. Williams leaders were: Celia Adams with 11 kills, senior Gracie Guidotti with 13 assists, and Sidra Wohlwend with 12 digs.

Eph head coach Christi Kelsey reflected on the loss, "There were certainly some good parts but tonight definitely showed us some areas where we still can continue to grow. A lot of it comes down to our consistency and how we execute, which we did really well in the first set and at times in sets two, three, and four. We were just not able to put as many strings of points together as we would have liked. We have a lot of confidence in this group to take these learning moments and come out tomorrow stronger and ready for another opportunity to play!"

The Ephs will be back in action against Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday, October 8th, at 1:00 PM EST.
