SALISBURY, MD. - Two goals in the first half and one in the second gave Williams a 3-0 victory over Washington and Lee University in the second round of the NCAA DIII Field Hockey Championship Tournament.
NESCAC Player of the Year, Emily Batchelor got the Ephs on the board first 1:35 into the game. First year Pilar Torres inserted the penalty corner to Batchelor, who launched a shot from the top of the shooting circle to put the Ephs up 1-0. With a phenomenal senior season, Batchelor netted her 20th goal of the season, breaking the Williams College school record for most goals scored in a singular season.
At the 24:36 mark, senior Catherine Torres found senior Shea van den Broek wide open to slide it past the goalkeeper's left foot. The Ephs went into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead.
Senior Kelly McCarthy sealed the victory for the Ephs three minutes into the fourth quarter. Sophomore Meaghan Boehm's initial shot was saved by Generals goalkeeper Abby Long, but McCarthy was there to capitalize on the rebound, ending the scoring for the day.Â
Williams outshot Washington and Lee 14-5, with 9 shots on target for the Ephs and 2 on target for the Generals. Eph goalkeepers, Carson Stephenson and Gates Tenerowicz, each made a save to produce the shutout.Â
Asking head coach Alix Barrale for her thoughts after advancing into the elite eight, Barrale responded, "BEYOND EXCITED! Emily broke the school record for goals in a season! We played really well despite the heat. So proud of our team and how hard they play."
