Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The Williams College Ephs concluded the 2022 Citrus Invitational, securing three top-eight finishes in championship brackets and four top-four finishes in warrior brackets to go with an 11
th place overall team finish.
At 125,
David Yeh came out on fire in the warrior bracket, picking up three consecutive decisive wins to secure a 9
thplace overall finish.
At 133, Thursday's standout
Jack Napeloni was unable to best Castleton's Andrew Marchese, setting up a 7
th place bout with Roanoke's Corey Messick. Unfortunately, Messick came out on top, resulting in Napeloni taking home 8
th place overall.
At 149,
Caleb Seyfried, like Yeh, entered the day determined to pick up a warrior bracket win. In his first two matches, Seyfried delivered back-to-back sub-60 second pins, booking him a place in the 149B final where he was stopped by Joe Penchi of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
At 157,
Peter Kane started the day with a setback, losing for the first time all weekend in the semifinal to the eventual champion. Kane made sure that would be his only tally in the loss column though, rebounding with a pair of wins to secure a team high 3
rd place finish. Also at 157,
Jack Murphy rallied through the warrior bracket, picking up two pins along the way before falling in the final.
At 184, Will Smith started the day off right with a win over Josh Negron of Castleton, keeping him in the running for a podium spot. In the following match he found himself paired up again with Mahlic Sallah of Roanoke. In a nail-biter, Sallah grabbed a narrow 4-3 win by decision, forcing Smith into the 5
th place match. In another tight affair, Smith was unable to overcome his opponent from Cornell, leaving him with a 6
th place finish.
At heavyweight,
Wyatt Moyer fought to the semifinal of the warrior bracket where a 2-1 sudden victory went against his favor.
Reflecting on his team's performance over the past two days, Eph head coach
Scott Honecker had this to say: "We had a rough first day and we didn't perform as well as we're capable. I'm looking directly in the mirror on this one. These guys did a great job managing their weight over the holidays and I didn't guide them nearly as well as I should have in their recovery. We regrouped, refocused and had a strong second day.
David Yeh and
Jack Murphy really set a great example by wrestling their tails off in day two after some losses on day one. We are excited to get these boys back to campus and make some big jumps in the room over the January term."
The Ephs will be back in action on home turf in just over a week's time when they host the Williams Open at historic Lasell Gymnasium on Saturday January 7
th.
