Williamstown, Mass. – The Williams College Ephs played host to NESCAC foe Trinity College in front of a packed Lasell Gymnasium on Friday Night for Senior Night. In what proved to be an action-packed meet, Williams recorded three pins and four wins by major decision, racking up 30 team points en route to a 17-point victory over the Bantams (30-13).
Senior
Jack Murphy kicked things off for his squad with a dominant major decision victory at 165, shutting out his opponent while scoring eight points of his own.
Eamon Garrity-Rokous, who weighed in at 165, featured next at 174 for the Ephs and delivered a crowd-pleasing pin at 2:53 to boost the Ephs' lead to 10-0. Building onto the the 10-0 advantage was Will Smith at 184, who after conceding an early pair of points on a takedown, responded with an 11-1 run to secure the team another 4 points.
At 197, Anders Klass got Trinity on the board with a 7-3 decision over
Elias Chen. Trinity's second of four individual wins came next at heavyweight with Timothy Glynn knicking
Thomas Goodwin by a single riding time point at the buzzer, reducing Williams' lead to 10-6.
The Ephs got back to winning ways when senior
David Yeh stepped onto the mat at 125. Yeh, who was in full control throughout, brought the gym alive with a stunning slam in the second period. His opponent, Matthew Carrozza, refused to be pinned though, forcing Yeh to settle for a 18-6 major decision victory. Next, at 133, Trinity's Adam Schaulien was able to pick up a 12-4 major decision in a hard-fought bout with
Donnie Morton.
Scotty Richter, entered the stage next for the Ephs, and after a bit of a slow start exploded with a lightning-fast pin near the tail-end of the first period. Richter's win at 141 gave the Ephs a 24-10 advantage with two bouts to go. At 149,
Caleb Seyfried fought hard but fell just short, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Bantams' Chris Perry. In the final bout of the night,
Peter Kane wasted no time, dispatching his opponent with a pin in 47 seconds. Kane's victory sealed the 30-13 win for Williams, improving the team's dual meet record to 2-2.
Reflecting on the meet, Eph head coach
Scott Honecker couldn't help but shout-out his outstanding senior class: "
Albert Xing,
David Yeh, and
Jack Murphy have given an immeasurable amount of themselves to this program. Ultimately, a first semester dual is going to be meaningless in the ultimate trajectory of this team, but to give those guys a Senior Night win in front of their friends and family is about as meaningful to the guys on the team and the coaching staff as I can possibly imagine."
The Ephs will now take some time to recover in preparation for a big trip down to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to close out the 2022 portion of the campaign at the Citrus Invitational.
