Auburndale, FL -- In their second day in Florida, the Williams College Ephs faced off against the Big Green of Dartmouth College. Playing in the Division Ivy League, Dartmouth owned a win over national powerhouse Louisville coming into their game against the Ephs.
Â
The first inning was a strong start for the Ephs, with second baseman Danny Lynch doubling into the right-centerfield gap, and third baseman and captain
Jakob Cohn earning an RBI on his own double directly after. Designated hitter
Brendan Stannard ripped a hard hit ground ball at the shortstop, scoring Cohn on an error.
Â
Sophomore pitcher
Eric Gage had his first start since last season, where he was a weekend starter for the Ephs. Gage threw brilliantly through the first two innings, getting ahead of batters with a hard two-seam fastball and curve ball. In the second inning, Eph Shortstop and captain
Eric Pappas belted double to score first-year
James O'Connor, putting the Ephs up 3-0.
Â
Dartmouth would have themselves a big inning in the third, with two runners getting on base via walk and a third from a hit by pitch. A hard line drive to right field despite a diving attempt by junior
Tyler Spiezio saw the ball fall and score three, with a fourth scoring earlier in the inning on a passed ball.
Â
First year Jake Martin got the ball to start the fourth inning, striking out the side and keeping the Ephs firmly in the ball game. The top of the 5th inning would be the next time the Ephs scored, with
Brendan Stannard hitting a single and eventually making his way home on a balk.
Â
The next three innings were where Dartmouth built their lead, with the Ephs going into their bullpen to complete the nine inning contest. Eph pitchers issued fourteen walks on the day and Dartmouth was able to put too much pressure on the Ephs defense and pitching. The Big Green opened up a up a 13-4 lead.
Â
Looking to get more runs across,
Cole Whitehouse would cracked a double in the top of the eighth inning, and was brought home by a Matt Brown single. Jack Sandifer would walk, eventually scoring on a ground ball by
Ryan Young.
Â
The top of the ninth inning would be the first appearance of the year for
Sam Rohrer, a senior pitcher. Rohrer, who as a first year was a weekend starter for the Ephs and is expected to secure the late innings when NESCAC play begins. Rohrer had a strong outing against the difficult Dartmouth bats, but Dartmouth claimed a 15-6 win
