Game Recap: Softball |

Ephs Rally Late but Can't Catch Up to Amherst in 11-5 Defeat

Location: Williamstown, MA
Records: Williams 15-12, Amherst 17-6

The Short Story: The Mammoths scored just two at-bats into the game and never looked back. After a four-run third inning, Amherst led by three or more runs for the rest of the game, despite Eph rallies in the fourth and fifth innings.

Coach's Take: "[Amherst] obviously hit the ball really well. We had a nice little comeback, but we need to come out with a little more consistency and just play better. We know we can hit, but we haven't been. We'll be back, though."– Kris Herman

How it Happened
  • The Mammoths quickly scored in the first inning when left fielder Megan Taketa advanced to third on an error by Eph left fielder Tayler Wise '24 and right fielder Rachel Lovejoy drove her in with a sacrifice fly.
  • Amherst scored four more times in the top of the third, including a two-run home run by Lovejoy, and added another run in the fourth to make it 6-0.
  • After a leadoff single by first baseman Bailey Burger-Moore '23, catcher Sydney Fleming '25 and shortstop Ronni Ramos '24 got the Ephs back on the board with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-3. Taketa and Lovejoy responded with an RBI single and a two-run double, respectively, to put the Mammoths back up 9-3 in the top of the fifth.
  • A two-run double by Ramos made it 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Ephs couldn't cut into the Amherst lead any further. The Mammoths added two insurance runs in the seventh.

Inside the Box Score
  • Taketa and Lovejoy, the first two hitters in the Amherst lineup, combined for five hits, six runs, and six RBIs.
  • Ramos' home run in the bottom of the fourth was her first of the season. Fleming's was her fourth, which puts her one behind designated player Mara Kipnis '22 for the team lead.
  • Despite the high score, both teams missed several opportunities to put more runs on the board. The Ephs threw out two Mammoths at home and another at third, but also left eight runners on base, including five in scoring position.
Next Up for the Ephs
  • Tomorrow, the Ephs will travel to Amherst to finish the three-game set with a doubleheader, starting at 12:00PM.
