Williams Falls to Hamilton in 5 Set Thriller

Williamstown, MA - Williams College (4-2, 1-1 NESCAC) narrowly lost to Hamilton College (5-1, 1-1 NESCAC) in five sets in the second matchup of NESCAC play.

Hamilton got out to a fast start in the fifth set, as they established early leads of 5-1 and 10-5. A streak by Williams tied the game at 11-11 with a service ace from junior Marit Hoyem, but Hamilton won the next three points to set up three match points at 14-11. However, a powerful kill from first year Helen Qian and back-to-back double blocks from Helen Qian and senior Morgan Persky tied the game again at 14-14. However, the Continentals surged and won the final set 16-14 with a kill by junior Summer McClintic.

In the first set, Hamilton controlled the action early on, and two Williams timeouts did little to slow the Continentals as they marched out to an 18-8 lead. However, the Ephs rallied as they won eight of the next ten points to narrow the gap to four points. From there, Hamilton surged to set up six set points at 24-18, and although the Williams was able to save three of them, a kill from junior Kate Carman won the set 25-21 for the Continentals.

The second set started out with little to separate the two sides, with 3 lead changes and 6 ties taking place in the first 15 points. The Continentals briefly separated for a 15-11 lead, but a smart tip shot by Marit Hoyem and a down the line kill from junior Celia Adams helped the Ephs reel Hamilton back in and tie the set at 15-15. Hamilton again built a lead, however, and secured the set 25-23.

Williams led the third set nearly wire to wire, as they started out with a 4-1 lead after they won a marathon point that included a highlight-worthy dig from sophomore Sidra Wohlwend and a double block from Morgan Persky and senior Anna Tosolini. With the game later tied at 9-9, the Ephs went on a 10-1 run that forced two timeouts, to no avail, from the Continentals. Although Williams continued on to lead 23-17, two points away from winning the set, Hamilton rallied and won six of the next seven points to make it a one-point game. However, the Ephs were able to snag the third set 25-23 with a clutch kill from first year Annaliese Fricke

The fourth set started out tight, as although the Continentals never held the lead, they didn't ever fall behind by more than three points. That is, until the end of the set, when a strong service run from Marit Hoyem helped the Ephs surge from 17-15 to win the set 25-15 on a dump kill from junior setter Lauren Kauppila.

Hamilton leaders were: sophomore Drew Stimson with 17 kills each, junior Melissa Morelli with 43 assists, and Summer McClintic with 16 digs. Williams leaders were: Annaliese Fricke with 12 kills, Lauren Kauppila with 27 assists, and Sidra Wohlwend with 18 digs.

Commenting on the tough loss, Eph head coach Christi Kelsey said, "This is the way the NESCAC goes, it's going to be a battle night in and night out with all ten other teams that we play, which makes this conference great, and it also makes it so we have to be prepared every time we step on the court. I told the team that I wasn't disappointed at all with how we finished in the last few sets and really gave ourselves a chance to win there at the end, but I think a big learning lesson for us is coming out prepared from the start, so that no matter what happens the night before, be able to reset, and put into practice what our gameplan is right from the very beginning. Hopefully we'll do that better next week and get another chance."

Williams will travel to Amherst, MA on Friday, September 23rd, where they will take on Amherst College at 7:00 PM EST.
